Olla Podrida - var. (Berkeley High School, Berkeley, CA, 1955) The Berkeley
High School yearbook from 1955 (white cover) includes several photos of Phil
Lesh as a sophomore.
Olla Podrida - var. (Berkeley High School, Berkeley, CA, 1956) The Berkeley
High School yearbook from 1956 (black (dark) cover) includes several photos of
Phil Lesh as a junior.
Olla Podrida - var. (Berkeley High School, Berkeley, CA, 1957) The Berkeley
High School yearbook from 1957 (red cover) includes several photos of Phil
Lesh as a senior.
The Jefferson Airplane And The San Francisco Sound - Ralph J. Gleason
(Ballantine Books, New York, 1969) has a chapter "Jerry Garcia - The Guru",
which is an interview with Garcia in 1967 after the first Grateful Dead album
was released. Published in June, 1969.
The Dead Book: A Social History of the Grateful Dead - Hank Harrison (Links
Books, New York, 1970) contains a flexi-record of the Dead doing 'Trips' music
to Neal Cassady's rap at the Straight Theatre, July 23, 1967. In the book,
the character "Gladstone Odduck" is Hank Harrison.
Fillmore East & West - James A. Hudson (Scholastic Books, 1970) First
printing in November, 1970. Yes, this is *that* "Scholastic Books"! The
final chapter, entitled "A Night At The Fillmore East", is about February,
1970 shows at the Fillmore East with the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers
and Love. The chapter is short on accuracy. The author describes "Wild Bill
Constanten" as wearing a goatee and a Stetson hat and playing the gong and the
organ, a dull drums, and the Dead as having played a song entitled "Miss Me
When I'm Gone" (a title contrived from the chorus of "I Know You Rider".)
Rock Folk - Michael Lydon (Dial Press, New York, 1971) Includes a chapter
about life on the road with the Dead during May, 1969, mostly the shows at
Springer's Inn in Oregon. This chapter is a reprint of a Rolling Stone
magazine article from August 23, 1969.
England '72: "Book Of The Dead" - (Warner Brothers Records, London, 1972)
A tour book issued for the Dead's tour of England and Europe in Spring, 1972.
Garcia: A Signpost To New Space - Jerry Garcia, Charles Reich, and Jann
Wenner (Straight Arrow, San Francisco, 1972) This is an interview with Garcia
and Mountain Girl.
Grandfather Rock - David Morse (Dell, New York, 1972, ISBN 0-440-93029-4) In
this book on rock music lyrics, the chapter entitled "Death" includes a
discussion of Robert Hunter, the Dead's "Casey Jones", and some background
about the real Casey Jones.
Turn It Up (I Can't Hear The Words) - Bob Sarlin (Simon and Schuster, New
York, 1973) Contains a chapter "Robert Hunter - An Invisible Songpoet", which
is about Robert Hunter and the lyrics to the "Workingman's Dead" and "American
Beauty" albums.
Ken Kesey's Garage Sale - Ken Kesey ( ) In the screenplay, the "Samuel
Hawkholder" character is supposedly based on Jerry Garcia.
Clive: Inside The Record Business - Clive Davis (William Morrow, New York,
1975) This book, by the president of Arista Records, contains several
references to the Grateful Dead and their signing with Arista.
Mouse & Kelly - Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelly (Delta/Dell Publishing Co., New
York, 1979) A portfolio of the artwork of Stanley "Mouse" Miller and Alton
Kelley, much of it done for the Grateful Dead.
Mouse & Kelly - Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelly (Phin Publ. Co., Phin House,
Cheltenham, UK, ) Contains eight 12 by 16 inch heavy art paper posters from
the "Mouse & Kelly" book.
Rick Griffin - Gordon McClelland (Perigee Books/G. P. Putman's Sons, New York,
1980) A portfolio of his artwork, much of it done for the Dead. Rick Griffin
was in a motorcycle accident on Friday, August 16, 1991, and passed away on
Sunday, August 18, 1991.
The Dead - Hank Harrison (Celestial Arts, Millbrae, CA, 1980) This book has
the 'flying eyeball' on the cover. Some first edition copies are signed by
the author and have a sticker on the cover stating this.
Grateful Dead: 1965 - 1980 "Singing Thank You For A Real Good Time" -
(Grateful Dead Productions, October, 1980) A 12 page picture booklet.
Better Homes And Gardens - ( ) One of the issues from 1980 featured the
Dead's former house at 710 Ashbury Street, which had been renovated between
1973 and 1978.
Far Away Radios - Robert M. Petersen (Robert M. Petersen, privately printed,
1980) This book used to be distributed through the Grateful Dead office.
The Rolling Stone Interviews: 1967 - 1980 - (Rolling Stone/St. Martin's
Press, New York, 1981) This collection on interviews includes an abbreviated
version of the Garcia interview that appeared in the book "Garcia: A Signpost
To New Space".
Grateful Dead: The Music Never Stopped - Blair Jackson (Delilah Book, 1983)
