I bought a PC 693 nearly a year ago and am quite pleased with it. It is
an immense improvement over the Craftsman 1 1/2 HP one it replaced.

I wanted a plunge router that could handle 1/2 bits. Porter Cable has
a reputation for building dependable, solid equipment. I looked at many
of the 3 HP plungers, but felt that they were too heavy and larger to
be handled easily. I haven't found a situation where the P.C. needed more
power. BTW - horsepower ratings are as easy to manipulate as any
statistics. Look at the amperage ratings as well.

I was also impressed with the plunge mechanism itself. Works
smoothly with convenient controls and locking lever. The only thing
that I might change is have an integral speed control.

I got both bases. It is easy to move the router motor from one to the
other. The standard (fixed) base is easier to adjust in a router table.

I haven't encountered this. I have used some moderately large bits
(3/4 inch radius round-over bit) with the router in a table with no
problem. I have an external speed control box that I bought for use
with larger shaper-style bits. I wouldn't use any of the traditional
panel-raising bits at full speed. The problem is not so much lack of
power as it is a fear that the bit will fly apart. Byrom (sp??) has
a series of panel raising bits with a vertical orientation to
avoid the high tip speeds, but I haven't tried them.
