I saw a very impressive demo of this router by a Porter Cable rep.
One thing he said, though, was that the model 690 (the fixed-base
version of the 693) was based on technology bought by Porter Cable
from Stanley Tools (I think) around 1910. He said Bosch also used to
use the same technology, but changed when they came out with the 1604.
He didn't go into details, and I didn't think to ask, but does anyone
know what he meant? I think it's interesting that the Porter Cable
router is pretty much all metal, while virtually everything else seems
to be mostly plastic.
One more question--what is the difference between the Porter Cable 690
and their model 536, which seems to have exactly the same specs?
