The Making Of The "Touch Of Grey" Video And More: Dead Ringers / A Behind
The Scenes Look At The Grateful Dead's First Video - Grateful Dead (6 West
Home Video / Arista) Released in September, 1987, this 30 minute VHS Hi-fi
video includes a live "Touch Of Grey", the "Touch Of Grey" video, and scenes
during the filming of the video. Directed by Justin Kreutzmann. The "Touch
Of Grey" video was shot on May 9, 1987, at the Laguna Seca Recreation Area
after the Dead's show there. The puppets were created by Annabelle Garcia.
So Far - Grateful Dead (6 West Home Video/Arista SW 5701) Released in
October, 1987, this 55 minute VHS Hi-fi Digital recording video contains live
versions of "Uncle John's Band" (Marin Vets), "Playing In The Band" (Marin
Vets > Oakland New Year's Eve, 1985), "Lady With A Fan", "Drums/Space", ( >
Marin Vets) "Not Fade Away", and "Throwing Stones" which are interspersed with
animation. It is the Grateful Dead recorded at the Marin County Veteran's
Auditorium (April 19, 20, and 21, 1985) without an audience. "So Far" was
premiered on TV by PBS during their fundraiser in August, 1990. Also shown
were the short video of "Touch Of Grey", "Hell In A Bucket", "Just A Little
Light", the long "Touch Of Grey", and "Foolish Heart".
(It Was) Twenty Years Ago Today - (PBS) A PBS documentary of the Summer of
Love, 1967 which includes a clip of the Dead playing at the Human Be-in with
Timothy Leary on stage with them. Broadcast in 1987.
New Year's Eve 1987 - Grateful Dead ( ) A pay per view cable broadcast of the
New Year's Eve concert, December 31, 1987, at the Oakland-Alameda County
Coliseum, Oakland, CA. Ken Kesey was the host for the show.
Olatunji And His Drums Of Passion - Hosted By Mickey Hart (Video Artists
International VAI 69046) Live at the Oakland Coliseum on New Years Eve,
1985. Produced by Mickey Hart and directed by Len Dell'Amico, it is 51
minutes long, in color, and VHS Hi-Fi. Released in 1988.
Bone Alley - Robert Hunter (Relix Video ) A video of the song from the
"Liberty" album, with Hunter appearing with an eye patch, black cape, hat
brim pulled down disguise.
Uninhibited - ( ) Video advertisements for Cher's 'Uninhibited' perfume use
"Eep Hour", from the first Garcia solo album, as background music.
Datsun Trucks - ( ) Robert Hunter allowed "Truckin'" to be used for the ads
run in Canada.
The World Of Audubon: Greed, Guns, And Wild Life - ( ) This program on
poaching is narrated by Richard Chamberlain. It includes "#3 for Gaia" and
another piece by Hart. Broadcast on WTBS cable in March, 1989.
MTV Closet Classics - var. (Sony Video) This hour long video of various live
rock performances includes the Dead playing "One More Saturday Night". This
is from Hamburg, Germany, on the 'Beat Club' TV show, and was recorded during
the Grateful Dead's "Europe '72" tour.
In Concert Against AIDS - var.( ) "Iko Iko", "Truckin'", and "Fire On The
Mountain" from the May 27, 1989 show were broadcast on KRON-TV (Channel 4,
(415) 561-8638). Garcia and Weir also play with John Fogerty. Also broadcast
were Garcia and Weir doing a pitch for donations, the high point of which is
Garcia calling Weir a 'klutz' because he messes up his lines.
Casey Kasem's Rock 'N' Roll Goldmine - The San Francisco Sound - var. ( )
This video includes the Dead performing "Truckin'", probably from a 1972 show.
Summer Solstice At The Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA - Grateful
Dead ( ) A pay per view cable broadcast on the Showtime network and national
FM radio simulcast by Westwood One of the June 21, 1989 show. The encore,
"Brokedown Palace", was faded out in the middle to end the show at the correct
time. The intermission music was provided by Bob Bralove, Howard Danchik (of
Ultra Sound), who wrote the music, and Dan Healy on a variety of synthesizers
with MIDI links.
Summer Solstice At The Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA - Grateful
Dead ( ) This show from June 21, 1989 was re-broadcast on cable a few days
after the concert, this time showing an almost complete "Brokedown Palace"
encore, except for the final repeat of the last verse. This was done by
cutting approximately five minutes at the beginning (Bob Weir kicking the amps
was shown, the "Hideaway" jam was cut, and a return just before the first
'song', "Touch Of Grey").
Nightline - ABC News ( ) The July 4, 1989 program included Jerry Garcia, Bob
Weir, and Los Lobos playing an acoustic "This Land Is Your Land". At the
beginning of the show, about 10 seconds of Garcia and a member of Los Lobos
playing "Sitting On Top Of The World" were broadcast. Later, a few seconds
of "Let The Good Times Roll" were shown. A portion of "Ripple" from the
"American Beauty" album was played over images from around the nation. These
segments were taped backstage at Sullivan Stadium, Foxboro, MA, on July 2,
1989.
