Fire In The City - (Krug) This documentary film, directed by Jerry Stoll,
includes jazz vocalist Jon Hendricks with the pre-Warlocks Grateful Dead
backing him on two songs: "Sons And Daughters" and "Fire In The City".
- var. ( ) In 1966, the Dead appeared on a music television show broadcast
on KPIX in San Francisco to lip-synch one of their songs. Phil Lesh appears
playing a broom as a stand up bass.
The Hippie Temptation - CBS News (1967) Harry Reasoner visits the Haight.
Includes interviews with the band and footage of the Dead playing "Dancin' In
The Streets" on a flatbed truck in Golden Gate Park.
Petulia - (1968) This movie by Richard Lester stars George C. Scott and Julie
Christie. It has scenes of Haight-Ashbury and the Grateful Dead performing
"Viola Lee Blues" at an 'Acid Test'.
Super Spread - ( ) This movie, with a soundtrack by the Grateful Dead, played
April 13, 1967 at the Cedar Alley Cinema in San Francisco.
The Columbia Revolt - (The Newsreel) This 50 minute documentary film by
Stewart Bird, Jerry Long, Richard Pike, David Stone, and others, is about the
student rebellion at Columbia University. It includes footage, from May 3,
1968, of the Grateful Dead playing at the Low Library Plaza. The audio of
"Cold Rain And Snow" and "Sitting On Top Of The World" appears to be dubbed
from the Dead's first album. This movie also may have been called (released
as) "Columbia Strike '68".
Playboy After Dark - (Playboy) The Dead play "St. Stephen", "Mountains Of The
Moon", and "Turn On Your Lovelight" on this July 10, 1969 broadcast. The
program was recorded on January 18, 1969. The bands segment starts with a
discussion between Hugh Heffner and Jerry Garcia. An acoustic "Mountains Of
The Moon" is played, with just Garcia and Weir on acoustic guitar, Phil Lesh
on bass, and Tom Constanten on organ. The whole band, with Pigpen on congas,
plays "St. Stephen", which appears to have been highly edited. "Turn On Your
Lovelight" was played over the closing credits, although the band was not
shown playing the song.
Zabriskie Point - (Michaelangelo Antonioni, producer) The soundtrack contains
an excerpt of "Dark Star" from "Live/Dead" (heard when the lead actor
'borrows' an airplane in L.A.), and "Love Scene", an acoustic guitar solo by
Garcia (heard during the desert love scene).
Woodstock - ( ) Jerry Garcia appears for a few moments and says
"Marijuana - Exhibit A". Pigpen is also seen briefly.
San Francisco Sounds - Jefferson Airplane, Santana, and Grateful Dead ( )
Recorded on February 4, 1970 at the Family Dog at the Great Highway in San
Francisco. The Dead play "Hard to Handle", "China Cat Sunflower" > "I Know
You Rider", and appear in the jam at the end. Broadcast on PBS. Sancho was
the family dog of the Family Dog commune that put on dances.
Calebration - Grateful Dead and Quicksilver Messenger Service ( ) The Dead
perform "Easy Wind", "Candyman", "Casey Jones", "Brokedown Palace", and
"Uncle John's Band". Recorded August 30, 1970 at the KQED studios in San
Francisco. Broadcast on local TV.
Winterland Arena, S.F. - Grateful Dead ( ) Television broadcast on KQED and
quadraphonic simulcast on KQED-FM and KSAN-FM of the October 4, 1970 show.
New Year's Eve, 1970 - Grateful Dead ( ) The first set of December 31, 1970
was broadcast on KQED and first four songs were simulcast on KSAN-FM.
Gimme Shelter - ( ) Garcia appears at Altamont getting off a helicopter.
Members of the band also appear discussing the bad vibes and decide not to
perform at the concert.
Last Days of the Fillmore - ( ) The Grateful Dead perform "Casey Jones" and
"Johnny B. Goode". Garcia is shown on pedal steel, warming up with the NRPS.
Grateful Dead - (Robert Nelson, 2710 East Kenwood, Milwaukee, WI 53211) A
short movie of the Dead from 1967 in canoes and having fun while the music is
from the first album. Filmed some time in 1967.
TV From The Tivoli - ( ) The April 17, 1972 show at the Tivoli Gardens in
Copenhagen, Denmark was broadcast on television in Europe.
Beat Club - ( ) The Dead performed "One More Saturday Night" and "Truckin'"
on April 21, 1972 for this German TV show out of Bremen, West Germany. In
the credits, Pigpen was listed as "Ron 'Pigpen' McKerney" and Keith Godchaux
was listed as "Keith Godcheaux".
Grateful Dead From The Mars Hotel - ( ) A 30 second animated promo for the
album. Shown on television in 1974.
