Why it is prescribed: Mebendazole, an antiworm medication,
kills parasites. It is used to treat roundworm, hookworm, pinworm,
whipworm, and other worm infections.
When it is to be taken: Mebendazole usually is taken twice
a day, in the morning and evening, for three days or as a single
dose. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully.
How it should be taken: Mebendzole comes in the form of
chewable tablets. Your prescription label tells you how much to
take at each dose. You may chew the tablets, swallow them whole,
or crush and mix them with food.
Special Instruction : Keep all appointments with your doctor
and laboratory so that your doctor can determine when your infection
is cured. If symptoms persist, contact your doctor. You may need
another treatment. If itching in the anal area is severe, ask
your doctor to recommend a cream or ointment to relieve it. To
get rid of pinworms, every person in your household must be treated.
The worm's eggs are easily transmitted to other people by bedding,
clothing, food, toys, and even air. In addition to treatment with
mebendazole, follow these steps to get rid of pinworms:
1. Keep your fingernails trimmed short.
2. Wash your hands with soap and water and clean under your fingernails
often, especially after using the toilet and before eating.
3. Take a shower or stand-up bath every day.
4. Wear snug-fitting undergarments and change them daily.
5. Launder all night clothes and bed linens in hot water daily.
6. Air your bedroom daily.
7. Scrub bathroom floors and the toilet seat with a disinfectant
solution daily.
8. Vacuum and do not sweep all floors and upholstered furniture
every day to remove pinworm eggs. In addition to treatment with
mebendazole, follow these steps to get rid of other worms (other
than pinworms):
1. Avoid placing fingers or hands in the mouth, especially when
playing or working out-of-doors in the dirt.
2. Wash your hands with soap and water and clean under your fingernails
often, especially after using the toilet and before eating.
3. To prevent re-infection with hookworms and threadworms, wear
shoes when out-of-doors.
4. To prevent re-infection with roundworms, was all fruits and
vegetables before eating them.
5. If you forget to take a dose, take the missed dose as soon
as you remember it. However, if you remember a missed dose near
the time for your next scheduled dose, take only the scheduled
dose. Do not take a double dose.
Side Effects : Although side effects from mebendazole are
not common, they can occur. Diarrhea, abdominal pain. If these
effects persist or are severe, contact your doctor.
Other Precautions : Before you take mebendazole, tell your
doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Storage Conditions : Keep this medication in the container
it came in, tightly closed, and out of the reach of children.
