Generic Name : LINDANE

Pronunciation : (lin' dane)

Trade Name(s) : GAB, Gamaderm, Gammexane, Lorexane.

Why it is prescribed: Lindane kills parasites and their eggs. It is used to treat scabies (a skin infestation) and lice infestations of the head and body. Lindane does not prevent these infestations.

When it is to be taken: Usually, one application of Lindane completely eliminates the parasites. However, the treatment may need to be repeated after one week; contact your doctor if signs of infestation reappear.

How it should be taken: Lindane comes in thef orm of lotion, cream, and shampoo. Do not swallow it. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully. To use the cream or lotion, follow these steps:

1. If you have crusted sores, first bathe with soap and lukewarm water; scrub and remove scaling and crusted materials. Allow your skin to dry and cool before applying lindane.

2. Shake the lotion well.

3. If you have scabies, apply a thin layer of lotion or cream to all parts of your body from your neck down to your toes and gently massage it in. If you have lice, apply lindane to the affected hairy area and the adjacent area. Ask your doctor any questions you have about where to apply the cream or lotion.

4. Leave the cream or lotion on your skin for 8 to 12 hours. Do not take a bath during this period and do not wash off any of the cream or lotion.

5. Dress in clean clothes and wear these same clothes throughout the treatment period.

6. After 8 to 12 hours have passed, wash off the drug completely with soap and water.

7. Dry yourself well with a clean, dry towel.

8. Dress in clean clothes. The shampoo is used for public lice (crabs) and head lice.

To use the shampoo, follow these steps:

1. If you use an oil-based hair dressing, shampoo your hair with your regular shampoo and dry it thoroughly before applying lindane.

2.Do not stand or sit in a shower or bathtub; lean over a sink to apply lindane to your head.

3. Shake the shampoo well. Apply to 1 ounce or one to two tablespoonsful of shampoo to dry hair. Work it thoroughly into the hair for four or five minutes, adding small quantities of water to form a good lather.

4. Rinse the hair thoroughly with water. Dry it with clean towel.

5. Comb the hair with a fine tooth comb or use tweezers to remove lice eggs and larvae. If you have head lice, wash comb and brushes with lindane shampoo and rinse them thoroughly with water to remove the drug.

2. Thoroughly clean all bathtubs, showers, and toilets in your home with rubbing alcohol.

3. Use Lindane only as directed by your doctor. Do not use more of it and do not use it more often than your doctor has instructed.

4. You may have transmitted the parasites to family members and close contacts; advise them to see a doctor if they develop symptoms of infestation.

5. If you have scabies and your skin has become sensitive to the parasite, itching may persist for several weeks after the treatment. However, this itching does not mean that treatment was a failure. Contact your doctor if you have questions.
