I have both a belt sander (4x21, Sears) and the PC random orbital.
I have been happy with the Sears belt sander (rapid stock removal,
even "footprint", adequate control, etc) but it does not leave a
finished surface. I got the PC having seen Norm Abrahms (sp?) use
it. Since I got it, I almost NEVER use the belt sander anymore.
The manufacturer's claims are justified, IMHO. Stock removal is
almost as fast as the belt sander, but control is MUCH greater.
And the resulting surface is glass-smooth (when using 150 grit
disks).
I almost never need to use any of my finishing sanders anymore. In
fact, I cannot off-hand think of when I last used one of them...
