I got turned on to the Porter Cable random orbital sander this spring.
It comes close to its claim of belt sander functionality, but truely
shines for putting a mirror finish on hardwood in no time. You will not
balk at finishing an oak piece ever again with one of these beauties in
your arsenal.
I have the 5" single speed model and I love it. I haven't tried the
multiple speed version, but that is the one I would get if I had it to
do over again.
Like any sander, it takes patience to get the best results with a ROS.
I still finish some pieces by hand or with a palm sander, but the
RO sander really speeds up the really tedious parts. You will not regret
getting one of these.
