I just spent a weekend using the Porter Cable 7334 Random Orbital Sander
and am happy to report that I was very pleased with it. It does what
they say: sands rapidly with a swirl free finish. The sandpaper lasts
a long time, too. The sander has plenty of power and little vibration
when running at full speed. After it is turned off, it slows down and
then just spins, without the orbital motion. This period is what
impresses me the most. It just spins, without any vibration at all,
giving you the feeling that this is a well-made, precision instrument.
I highly recommend this sander.
Note, it can be purchased in "kit" form, which means you get a case
and a couple of rolls of sandpaper. I wish I had known this, I would
have gone for it. I bought a plate jointer at the same time, in kit
form, and am glad I did. (the plate jointer is nice too, but we all
know that.) There are also variable speed versions of the sander,
I don't know what they cost or if they're worth it.
