This topic was discussed in FineWoodworking a while ago (I don't remember
the exact issue), and their opinion was that at concentrations that would
pose a problem with open flames the dust would be so thick you wouldn't be
able to breath it. I have operated a kerosene heater in my garage shop for
3 years, and granted I use a shop vac on my saw to reduce the dust (both
airborne and on the floor) it gets dusty in there and I have no problems.
I do, however, turn the heater off to use solvents.
