I'm about to buy a scroll saw. Budget and space being what they
are, I'm all but certain to buy one of the Taiwanese ones; the question
is which. Local saws (that I've found so far, at least) carry the
Delta and the Jet for $159, which seems a bit high to me. (Of those
two, I'd get the Delta; on the Jet, even the big warning labels were
in very broken English, which doesn't leave me optimistic about the
instruction manual. On the other hand, I don't speak any Chinese,
so who am I to comment on someone else's skill with another language?)
Grizzly has one that appears similar for $99 plus a (small, I think)
shipping charge; however, according to the charts in Wood's Power
Tools guide, it has a fixed blade mount, as opposed to a pivoting one.
The guide claims that this is a disadvantage, as blades on fixed arms
break more frequently. Does the accumlated wisdom of the net agree?
They did like the AMT model 4601 better than the other Taiwanese
saws; has anyone here tried one?
Finally, they mention a kit from Advanced Machinery Imports to let
you use Hegner blade clamps on the Taiwanese saws. Any experience
with them? At $40 a set, I'm not sure it's worth it till I have some
experience showing me that I have a problem without the upgrade,
but...
