I have the 2-variable-speed Milwaukee Sawzall with 4.0 amp motor and
3/4" blade stroke ( the Super Sawzall with 8.0 amp motor and 1-1/4 "
stroke came out just after I bought mine). I looked closely at the
B&D and Makita recip. saws at the same time. Those others have 6.0
amp motors and ~1-3/16" blade strokes and were slightly less expensive
than my Milwaukee, but I chose the Sawzall because it just felt "right"
when I held it, i.e. the handle was the most comfortable and the
balance was the best, IMHO. I've glanced at Bosch and Hitachi recip.
saws in the stores but never touched them so I don't know too much
about them except that they have around 8 amp motors.
If I were buying another recip saw, I would definitely spend the extra
money and get the Milwaukee SuperSawzall. You can reverse the blades
and adjust the shoe for more blade reach on this one. This may not sound
impressive but there have been several occasions where I wanted to reverse
the blade on my Sawzall while building an addition to my house. Milwaukee
also has 2 attachments for cutting pipe squarely and making flush cuts,
and the 25' QuickLock cords that can be used with any of their other
Magnum tools like drills or drivers.
If you don't have much hands-on experience with a reciprocating saw, I
guess I should warn you than these saws are best suited for rough work,
IMHO. I think it takes a good hand and eye to produce fine cuts with one
of these.
