I have had the Hitachi 1/2" 3HP router for a couple of years now.
I like it for straight cuts and in the router table. It does have
a great deal inertial momentum. Something like a gyroscope. I wouldn't
plan on using it for tender and light cuts. It needs to be held down
tightly. 3 HP is a lot of kick. I would also plan on using 1/2"
shafted bits for the Hitachi.
In the past I have found that 1/4" bits in the collet require a
great amount of tourque when set in place, or the router will simply
spin around them. This is a real pain sometimes. As a matter of fact
I have had a lot of problems using some special bits for a porter cable
mortise and tenon jig. The bits were in a 2 piece sleeve, which was in
a 1/4" collet which was in the 1/2" router. In the course of cutting
sixteen joints I had to remove , fix and reinsert the bit 6 times.
In summary, the hitachi is strong and reliable, but a little to
powerful for nimble freehand work.
