Let me second the recommendation of the Porter-Cable 690 series routers.
I have found them to be a nice compromise between power and ease of
control. They all use the same 10 amp motor with three different bases.
The standard double knob base, the D-handle base and a plunge base. You
buy the one you think you like the most (I started with the D-handle)
and then add additional bases (~$75) for plunging, permanent router
table base and one with a larger diameter hole for those rabbeting and
larger roundover bits. They come with both 1/2" and 1/4" collets and
I'm really please with mine. But what do I know? -virgil
