102 Router Recommendations

I'm definitely going to buy a router, but would appreciate some
expert opinions. I will use the router for home projects: end
tables, a vanity, etc. Since woodworking is not my only activity,
I would guess it will get moderate, as opposed to heavy, use.

First of all, what about fixed vs. plunge routers? Is the plunge
feature an advantage in all situations or just some? Is it worth
the additional cost?

Second, what horsepower do I really need? I've seen 3/4 hp, 1 hp,
and 1-1/2 hp. The additional cost for the more powerful ones is
a lot, it seems to me. Is it necessary or worth it?

I will guess that most on this newsgroup will advise going with
a top brand like Porter Cable. Seems like those cost around $130.
I am probably not going to by a budget ($65) router from Skil or
B&D. Is there a reliable near-top-of-the-line brand I should
check out?
