A long time ago, I asked for some hints as to what would be a
reasonable bandsaw to buy for a small, home shop. Thanks (!!)
to all of the people who replied. :-)
Most of the people I heard from said "don't buy Sears/Craftsman!!!"
I would tend to agree. One nice person said he'd had good luck
with a Jet bandsaw. I have spent the past year looking at assorted
catalogs and bandsaws and such and have come to the conclusion that
the Jet may indeed be the best machine for the money. It comes with
a 1 hp 3 speed motor (to allow for metal or wood cutting) whereas most
only come with a 1/2 hp motor. It also costs quite a bit less than
a (seemingly) comparable Delta. Only problem is, it appears that
only specific Jet outlets sell them. I have yet to see them
advertised in Fine Woodworking.
It's interesting that everyone believes the Delta/Rockwell is the finest.
This was probably true in the past, (and may still be, for all I know)
but having examined a few of their now Taiwan made machines, I am not
impressed with the quality for the outrageous prices they ask.
They tend to be almost twice as expensive as anyone else and used ones
(of any brand) are really hard to find. Also, I recently bought a
Delta drill press and, although not really disappointed, was not all
that impressed either. I think I could have gotten the same
performance/quality for less from someone else.
I also got a Grizzly catalog and browsed through it, but having seen
negative articles about some of their other machines in Fine Woodworking
and other magazines, am a bit dubious about them.
So, I am no expert and would still like to hear people's
opinions and experiences before I buy. Last time, I asked that folks
post to me directly, but the traffic was small enough that I think
the discussion might be better served on the Net.
Another question: do you think it is worth the extra
money to go for an 18" or larger bandsaw rather than a 14"
(with a riser to increase the height and hence vertical cutting capacity)?
