The history of Reiki will be briefly discussed elsewhere in this FAQ under the question "Who was Mikao Usui?" As for where the Reiki energy itself comes from is indeterminate and a matter for speculation.
For those who profess belief in a deity it is said to come from that deity (e.g., God/dess, Wakan Tanka, the Great Maker) some say it is a background energy field that the Reiki practitioner taps into, others that it is channeled through them by "spirit guides". Reiki flows through the practitioner but is neither generated by the practitioner nor depletes the Reiki practitioners own energy supplies.
(The source of Reiki makes for an interesting epistemological and ontological argument, since the source is widely regarded as metaphysical, hence, beyond science and so unable to be proved except by speculative methodology.)
