Opinion:
o [ AHH ] Recommended. Has the most thorough technical articles on
F1, IndyCars, and European Touring Cars that I've seen. The
pictures are good and you get a lot of text in the technical
articles, as well as good pictures and cutaway drawings. There is
a comprehensive listing of motorsport addresses. The editorial
team includes Quentin Spurring, Carroll Smith and Paul Van
Valkenburgh.
o [ PF ] Quite expensive, not often found on the news-stands, but
well worth seeking out. Requires a certain degree of technical
literacy to fully appreciate just how good this magazine is!
Excellent articles on all manner of racing technology
(particularly F1/Indy/Touring Cars) and news on the industry and
new equipment.
o [ DW ] I wasn't greatly impressed. The magazine borders on being a
breathless Formula 1 fanzine, with an occasional "tech" article.
o [ BK ] I strongly disagree [ with DW ] . They are the only
publication [ apart from the defunct Car Design Technology ] which
has discussed the implementation of pneumaticc valve trains in
depth (Circle Track and Smokey [ Yunnick ] would lead you to
believe that this is all ultra secret and that nobody will talk
about details).
The recent article on Dunlop race tires as used in the European
touring car series was excellent. I have been planning to
summarize the content. It contained some very basic facts and
rules about tires which I have not seen printed anywhere before
but which are very important to understanding how your tires are
behaving and why.
The coverage of Arthur Mallock's solid axle lateral location
device and his theories on anti-squat and roll steer were also
very interesting.
Carroll Smith's summary of the available differential technology
has been the only detailed summary I have seen to date (including
contacts for the companies that produce these differentials). His
shock article was also pretty good.
The information on Scott Sharp's 1993 SCCA Trans Am car was also
excellent. Reading that their front roll center is 1" below the
ground was quite interesting to me and certainly casts some doubt
on the credibility of those who categorically state that a front
roll center should never be below ground. Where else can I find
the track width of a front running Trans Am car?
Van Valkenberg's alternatives to active suspension were also
interesting to me. Some of that is definitely doable by the
motivated racer/fabricator.
The recent coverage of data acquisition was by far and away the
most comprehensive I have seen. It was not some high brow F1
coverage. It focused on what to look for in a low end system, what
inputs you really need when starting out, etc.
I could go on, but those are the articles that immediately come to
mind. When you say breathless F1 fanzine, I think you may be
referring to "Racer" ;-)

Opinion:[ AHH ] Glossy, colourful coverage of American motor sport,
covering F1, IndyCar, NASCAR, IMSA and SCCA. Has some well respected
authors like Gordon Kirby, Alan Henry & Maurice Hamilton. [ AR ]
Excellent colour illustrations. More like a scholarly journal with NO
race summaries in contrast to On Track which is more of a "bible".
