19 Locomotive Types: Diesels, Electrics, And Turbines

Diesel engine or gas turbine is connected to a generator:
orspower from overhead lines passes through internal
step-downstransformer. Electric power is regulated and
transmitted tosaxle motors in the trucks, hence diesel-electric,
(AC or DC).

             A=one powered axle       1=one unpowered axle
             B=two powered axles      2=two unpowered axles
             C=three powered axles    3=three unpowered axles
             D=four powered axles     4=four unpowered axles
             +=separation between different wheel sets
             Ao, Co,... is sometimes used for an axle with an
             independent traction motor
