The Acoustical Society of America recently awarded its 1994 Science Writing Award for this FAQ. The Science Writing Award is intended to "recognize and stimulate distinguished writing (or producing) that improves public understanding and appreciation of acoustics." The award, one of two given each year, has never before been given for a work published only on the Internet.
An article based on this FAQ appeared in the most recent issue of _Echoes_, the quarterly newsletter of the Acoustical Society of America (Spring 1996).
