Jumpers

SEAGATE ST15230NC INSTALLATION GUIDE 77767474, REV. A 3/1994

Jumper setting
==============

Each disk drive has one or more option select header connectors on
the back, side or front where jumper plugs are installed to select
the way that the drive is to be configured or to select its ID on the
I/O bus.

J2 Motor Start/Write Protect/Terminator Power
----------------------------------------------

              Position Numbers
          +-1--2--3--4--5--6--7--8-+ X SCSI
 ---------+ o X o o o o o 1 +---------X
          | o X o o o o xxxx |
          +----+-------------------+ \ Position A
              Position 2

     1 for Factory use only.

2 Jumper installed in position 2 enables the Delayed Motor
Start option (if jumper in position 3 is off). Motor start
delays is 16 times the drive ID number in seconds; i.e. drive
ID 0 starts immediately. Drive one starts 16 seconds later,
         etc.

3 Jumper installed enables Motor Start option. The drive waits
for the Start unit command from the host before starting the
spindle motor. If no jumper is installed, drive operation de-
pends on whetheror not there is a jumper in position 2.

If jumpers 2 and 3 are both off, drive spins up with no delay
         when power is applied.

4 Jumper installed means entire drive is write protected.

5 Jumper installed means parity checking by the drive is
         enabled.

J6 SCSI ID
-----------
SCSI address selection
-----------------------
On "NC" model drives the SCSI ID can be and presumably will be, set
over the 80 pin interface by the host computer. Unless directed to
do so by the system documentation, no jumpers should be installed for
address selection. On "NC" model drives, the host system also has
complete control over motor start functions, so no Motor Start or
Delayed Motor Start Jumpers should be installed.

Jumper header J6 can be used in one of five possible ways:

 1. Do not use J6 at all, but instead use the same functions conveyed
on lines in the 80 pin I/O connector (J1) to/from the host.

 2. Use jumpers on J6 only to establish drive ID on the SCSI bus. Do
not use both J6 and J1 signals to establish the drive ID. The SSP
(sync spindle) and the drive activity LED signals in I/O connector
J1 may be used to convey those twoo signals to/from the host.

 3. Install a connector/cable on J6 for remote drive ID switching. Do
not use both J6 and J1 signals to establish the drive ID. The SSP
and drive activity LED signals in J1 I/O connector can be used in
this situation, or see option 5 below.

 4. Install a connector/cable on J6 for SSP and remote drive activity
LED. Use I/O connector J1 for the drive ID signals.

 5. Install a connector/cable on J6 for all (remote ID switching, SSP
and remote LED). Do not use both J6 and J1 to establish drive ID.

The "NC" model drive time-shares the drive ID LED/SSP functions of
J6. The drive reads the ID from J1 and pins 1, 3 and 5 of J6 for
250 ms after power-on reset. So that ID jumper plugs can be used on
J6, pins 2, 4 and 6 are driven to ground through a transistor for the
250 ms period. After that, the drive makes available on the J6 header
pins 8 and 6 the remote LED and SSP functions the remainder of the
time.

 SSP
Time shared connection for the reference index signal (REFIND+)
(J6 pin 6, bottom) for sync spindle feature. SSP signal in J1 may be
 used instead.

LED
Time shared pins used to connect a cable for a remote LED indicator.
Pin 4 (bottom), the cathode connection connects in the drive to GRD
through the emitter-collector junction of a transistor switch that
controls the LED on/off condition. LED signal J1 may be used instead.

The PCB on "NC" models does not have connector J5, and has a single
80 oin combined SCSI I/O and DC power connector instead of the
normal 50 pin SCSI I/O and 4 pin DC power connectors. Included among
the 80 pins are the SCSI ID, Motor Start and Delayed Motor Start
select functions, and the synchronous spindle master sync signal and
the remote LED signals. Do not use J2 and J6 for these five functions
if the host uses the ones included in the 80 pin connector J1. The
J6 connector signals conform to SFF-8009 Revision 2.0, Unitized
Connector for Cabled Drives signal assignments for Auxiliary
Connector. ENTERM- and FAULT- are not connected.

Disc drive mounting
-------------------
The drive may be mounted in any orientation.

Mount to the host chassis using four 6-32 UNC screws. Three mounting
holes are in each side and four in the bottom of the drive. The
maximum length that the screws should extend into the side chassis
mounting holes is 0.15 inch (3.81 mm), and 0.20 inch (5.1 mm) into
bottom holes, measured from the outer surface of the chassis. The
minimum thread engagement for all mounting screws is .12 inch (3.05
mm). Tighten the screws evenly to a maximum torque of 6 in-lb (.675
NM). Do not over tighten or force when screw does not seem to screw
in easily (threads not correctly engaged).

Grounding
---------
Signal ground (PCB) and HDA ground are connected together in the
Hawk 4 family drives and cannot be separated by the user. The
equipment in which the drive is mounted is connected directly to the
HDA and PCB with no electrically isolating shock mounts. If it is
desired for the system chassis to not be connected to the HDA/PCB
ground, the systems integrator or user must provide a nonconductive
(electrically isolating) method of mounting the drive in the host
equipment.

SCSI interface drives
---------------------
The SCSI interface handles both drive geometry and defect management
internally. The "no drive installed" option is selected for systems
with SCSI drives.
