Jumper Setting
==============

TERMPWR (SCA)
-------------
SCA drives do not provide TERMPWR, active termination, or write
protection.

Termination SCA
---------------
Atlas II disk drives used in SCA (or Raid) systems cannot be
configured to provide bus termination. Therefore, be sure to properly
terminate the SCSI bus in which this drive is installed.

NOTE
Refer to your system or SCSI controller documentation regarding any
specific recommendations regarding drive placement on the SCSI bus
and SCSI bus termination.

SCSI ID (SCA)
-------------
Each SCSI device on the bus must have a unique SCSI ID number
assigned to it. The drive can be configured for SCSI ID numbers that
range from 0 through 15.

Configure the SCSI ID by providing the proper open or ground signal
input to the referenced pins of the drive's 80-pin SCA connector.

NOTE
Refer to your system or SCSI controller documentation for specific
recommendation about assigning SCSI ID numbers for you specific
system.

Spindle Synchronization SCA
---------------------------
The drive supports synchronized spindle operation. Whether the drive
operates as master or slave is determined by the contents of the RPL
field in the Rigid Disk Geometry Page (04h) for the drive.

The time interval between spindle synchronization checks is set using
the Spindle Sync Check Interval bit of the SCSI MODE SELECT command
Special Function Control page (25h).

The drive always maintains local speed regulation when no reference
signal is applied.

When the drive operates as a master, it generates a spindle
synchronization reference signal (SPINDL_SYNC_REF L). This reference
signal is available as an output to other drives at pin 37 of the
SCA connector.

When the drive operates as a slave, it looks for a spindle
synchronization reference signal (SPINDL_SYNC_REF L) as an input from
the master drive. The slave looks for this spindle synchronization
input at pin 37 of the SCA connector.

CAUTION
Atlas II series drives can be connected for synchronized spindle
operation. Models XP32275, XP34550 and XP39100 drives must not be
used for synchronized spindle operation in conjunction with drives
from different model series or unpredictable results might occur.
For example, XP32275J, XP34550J and XP39100J drives can be connected
for spindle synchronization in the same system, but they must not
include a synchronization connection to a DSP3210R drive.

NOTE
When connecting multiple drives together for spindle synchronization,
be sure to use proper cabling techniques to avoid ground loop
problems.

Spin Up Power On SCA
--------------------
Atlas drives have three Spin-Up on Power On modes:

 - Option 1
   Spin up occurs immediately when power is applied.

 - Option 2
   Drive spin up occurs after a predetermined delay following power
   on. The delay is equal to a user-specified multiplier, multiplied
   by one plus the numerical SCSI ID of the drive. This will give a
   staggered spin-up in multiple-drive installations.

 - Option 3
   Drive spin up is controlled by the START STOP UNIT command.

Configure the desired spin up option by setting the state of the
RMT_START (pin 38) and DLYD_START (pin 78) inputs to the 80-pin
SCA-2 connector. The states of these signal are set by using either
hardwired connections at the backplane or backplane logic.

Activity LED SCA
----------------
The drive provides the output ACTIVITY LED OUT to drive a user-
supplied activity LED (Pin 77).

 The output indicates the drive is performing a SCSI operation. To use
 this output, connect the user-supplied LED cathode to the ACTIVITY
 LED OUT (Pin 77) connection. The LED anode must be attached to the
 proper +5 VDC supply through an appropriate current-limiting
 resistor.

You can mount the disk drive in any position.

Mounting brackets may be required when installing the drive in a
5.25-inch form factor bay. We recommended using brackets supplied
by Quantum Corporation to mount the drive. Otherwise, the drive's
isolation characteristics could be compromised. A bracket kit
including four screws is available from the Quantum Corp. The part
number is 70-30695-01.

The drive base contains threaded holes on its sides and bottom to
mount the drive assembly. The holes accept #6-32 UNC screws.

Installation in a 3.5-inch Bay
------------------------------

Installation in a 5.25-inch Bay
-------------------------------
A Bracket kit including four screws is available from the Quantum
Corp. The part number is 70-30695-01. Attach the brackets to the
drive using four #6-32 screws.

CAUTION
Screw-length must not exceed 0.25-inch (6.25 millimeters); or the
drive may be damaged.

Because of the varity of mounting possibilities, these instructions
are general in nature. They should be used only as a guide for
mounitng the drive in your particular system.

------
Atlas II drives use single-ended or differential drivers and
receivers.

 The user furnishes the appropriate cables and connectors to match the
 drive connectors listed in the following table.

General Description
-------------------
The Atlas II disk drives are 3.5-inch, high-capacity, state-of-the-
art drives designed for high-end workstation, file servers, and
storage systems where high capacity and etraordinary performance are
critical.

Caching
-------
The drive contains a large, segmented buffer in RAM that is used to
maximize the throughput for sequential read streams. This cache is
organized as a number of separate track line segments. Each track
line segment can hold data from one complete track on the media,
temporarily assuming the identity of the track for all input/
output functions.

The buffer is also used to combine or coalesce I/O data on a track-
by-track basis, prior to accessing the disk media. Performance is
greatly improved by gathering and combining the data on a track
basis rather than on a command basis. With this unique system,
multiple commands for a particular track are coalesced in the buffer
before accessing the media.

As a result, multiple I/O commands, that address a single track are
logically combined, avoiding multiple disk accesses on multiple
rotations. Since most reads and writes are sequential, buffering data
before it is stored on the media yields greatly increased throughput
for most applications.

Embedded Servo System
---------------------
Embedded servo information is written in a spoke configuration on
every track, on every disk surface. The spokes (or headers)
consist of quadrature analog pattern and digital address data. The
digital portion of the spoke data are read and used to locate the
desired track, spoke, and head number. The quadrature analog signal
portion is detected and used by a servo feedback control loop to
precisely position the head on the track center.

Data integrity and security
---------------------------
Atlas II disk drives use a combination of parity checking, error
detection coding (EDC), error correction coding (ECC), and check-
pointing to protect stored data from media errors, transfer or
addressing errors, or errors introduced during sector reallocation.

Media Error Protection
----------------------
To ensure that data is the same as data written, the drive computes
and appends an Error Correction Code (ECC) to each sector of data
stored. The drive uses a 198-bit Reed Solomon code with a 2:1 inter-
leave, which can correct up to 10 bytes in each sector.

The drive can also correct up to 2 bytes per interleave (up to 4
per sector) in hardware ("on-the-fly"), with no loss in throughput.

Spindle Synchronization
-----------------------
The drive supports both mastered and masterless synchronization and
allows a rotational offset specified in units somewhat larger than
a degree. Spindle Synchronization is controlled by the Rigid Disk
Geometry and (Vendor) Special Funtion Control pages of the MODE
SELECT command.

NOTE
The drives must be homogenous. Other drive model series such as
Atlas I or Capella cannot perform spindly synchronization with Atlas
II series drives (but they can otherwise function together).

Spindle synchronization can be used to lock an array of drives into a
precise rational patters. When the heads on one drive are at a
particula address, the heads on the other drives are also known
locations.

Some mirrored configurations offset drives by half a revolution
(180*) to reduce rotaional latency. Other configurations use smaller
offsets to optimize system throughput. Knowing how long it takes to
set up an I/O operation and transfer data to a drive, the SCSI
controller can send the data to one drive and, while that data is
being transferred, set up the I/O transfer for the next drive.
When the first transfer is complete, the controller is ready to
transfer the next, and so on.

Special Functions
-----------------
Quantum has incorporated a number of unique options into the drive.
The (Vendor) Special Function Control page is used to control these
options. The options include:

 - Spin Delay - specifies if the drive should spin-up at power on or
   wait for a START STOP UNIT command from the host.

 - Initiate Synchronous Data Transfer Negotiation - a toggle-type
   parameter that allows the initiator to move between asynchronous
   and synchrounous modes of data transfer.

- Write Protect - Prevents writing to the disk drive.

 - Spindle Sync Check Interval - specifies the time, in minutes, of
   the interval between spindle synchronization status checks.

 - Stagger Spin Delay - allow a series of drives to be spun up at
   individually, reducing the load on the system power supply.

Banded recording
----------------
In banded recording, the disk is divided into multiple bands or
partitions (also called notches or bit-zoned areas). Starting at
inner band, each next outer band has a hihger recording frequency.
The Atlas II drives have 16 bands. The use of multiple-frequency
recording greatly increases the capacity of the drive.

Power-Up Self-Test
------------------
The disk drive performs a self-diagnostic test immediately at power
up. If the drive fails its self-diagnostic tests, it will report
sense information but will not spin up. Both the Fault LED and a
Busy LED briefly illuminate during spin-up as a lamp test.

If the drive passes its self-tests and the spin-up jumper is
installed, it spins up and perform further diagnostics on the HDA.
The drive indicates "not ready" until the HDA tests are completed
successfully.

The drive diagnostics test the following:

- RAM and ROM chips

- Buffer memory

- Gate array chips

- Read/write encoding circuits

- Basic servo functions

After a selection time following power-on, the disk drive is able to
respond with appropriate status and sense data to the TEST UNIT
READY, INQUIRY, and REQUEST SENSE commands.

SCSI Configured Automatically (SCAM)
------------------------------------
SCAM is a process of automatic ID assignment that eliminates the
need for user involement in the setting of unique SCSI IDs. The
drives support and conform to the SCAM-1 automatic ID assignment
protocol contained in the SCSI-3 draft standards for SCAM. The
drives are also fully compatible with SCSI devices that do not comply
with SCAM requirements.

This application note provides instructions for installing the Atlas
II family of disk drive products on a Digital system running DEC UNIX

/ DEC OSF rev 3.2 or later.

Note: Before placing any Atlas II drive on any of the following:

KZPSA (Wide Differential PCI Slot Controller) or
KZPSA (Wide Differential PCI Slot Controller)

Set the Always Save Data Pointers (AlwaysSDP) bit. This bit is
located in Mode Page 25h/Byte 2/Bit 7. Normally Byte 2 is set to
00hex. To set the Always SDP bit, this must be changed to 80hex.

 - Adaptec 1740 Controller, usually found in the DEC PC AXP 150
   (Jensen)

Set the Delay ESP (DlyESP) bit. This bit is located in Mode Page
25h/Byte 5/Bit 3. Normally, Byte 5 is set to 00hex. To set the
DlyESP bit this must be changed to 08hex.

 DRIVE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
 1. Connect drive on the bus (keeping in mind not to conflict id).
    For this example, let's assume the Atlas II drive is at id1,
    system disk is at id0, host is at id7, and the bus is BUS 0.

 2. Type "show config" at the console level before the system
    comes up. The user should see all devices on all buses. If
    the device is on a Turbo Channel slot (for example, tc1),
    then the user must type "t tc1 confg" to see the devices on
    that bus. (Please refer to your Hardware Configuration Guide
    for any questions related to console commands.)

3. After booting the system, type the following in any shell window:

    scu sho edt | grep "Direct Access"

The "scu" command will show all available drives and CD-ROM on the
system with their respective bus and ID number. It is important to
note bus type, 8-bit or Wide, and target id of the drive.

 4. Then type
    file /dev/rrz*c

This should also give a list of device files that each drive and/or
CD-ROM is using; e.g., bus 0 ID 0 is /dev/rrz0c, bus 0 ID 1 is /dev/
rrzlc. Rule of thumb: Devices files are numbered from rz0 - rz7 for
all ids numbered on an 8-bit single-ended bus 0; from 8 - 15 for ids
on an 8-bit single-ended bus 1, and so on_, e.g., bus 1 id 0 is rz8.
If you don't have a device file for the drive, refer to the System
Administration guide and the man pages on MAKEDEV to determine
options. Typically, sysadmin will have to "cd /dev" then execute
"./MAKEDEV rz#" to create the missing device files. For wide
drives, the steps are the same except device files are 16 per
bus; i.e., rz0 through rz15 for a wide bus 0.

 5. Once the device file has been identified (e.g., for bus 0 ID1,
    it would be /dev/rrz1c), type one of the following drive models:

    disklabel -rw rzl xp39100 - for 9GB, or
    disklabel -rw rz1 xp34550 - for 4GB, or
    disklabel - rw rz1 xp32275 - for 2GB

At that point, the drive is ready to be used with the system.
Type disklabel -r rz1 (to see the partition label of the drive).
To set up the drive in any other way other than the standard
disklabel, refer to the System Administrator's Guide and the man
pages on disklabel to determine options.

00hex. To set the Always SDP bit this must be changed to 80hex.

- Adaptec 1740 Controller, usually found in the DEC PC AXP 150

Set the Delay ESP (DlyESP) bit. This bit is located in Mode Page
25h/Byte 5/Bit 3. Normally, Byte 5 is set to 00hex. To set the
DlyESP bit this must be changed to 08hex.

 DRIVE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
 1. Connect drive on the bus (keeping in mind not to conflict id). For
    this example, let's assume the Atlas II drive is at id1, system
    disk is at id0, host is at id7, and the bus is BUS 0.

 2. Type "show config" at the console level before system comes up.
    The user should see all devices on all buses. If the device is on
    a Turbo Channel slot (for example, tc1), then the user must type
    "t tc1 confg" to see the devices on that bus. (Please refer to
    your Hardware Configuration Guide for any questions related to
    console commands.)

3. Boot system and the drive will be recognized. It is up to the user

    at that point to make sure that the necessary steps are completed
    to make the drive useful in Windows NT, i.e., formatting,
    partitioning, etc.

AHA 154x, 174x and possibly some newer models:
There is a timing issue in that old Adaptec host adapters cannot work
at the full speed of the Atlas (specifically, hardware read cache
hits in the drive are handled too quickly and the host adapter isn't
ready for data when the drive starts to send, so bytes get lost.)

Fix: Use DSP tools (PUBLIC\TOOLS\DSP) to set the ESPDLY bit in mode
page 25h. How: See ESPDLY.TXT.

AHA 2940UW:
Installing NT4.0 over an AHA-2940UW onto an Atlas with XL912 may not
work. We are also getting reports of XL912 not working up to par on
other systems. Vcommunications, for example, is requiring XL915 for
their System Commander software.

In response to this, DSE techs have been informed as to how to
identify Atlas module types and firmware revisions, and have been
instructed to upgrade anyone with XL912 to XL915. The required
upgrade materials (FW, DSPTools, instructions) can be found on our
BBS in the XL915 library, on our FTP site at ftp.qntm.com/pub/
Support/Firmware/Atlas, and by email per request.

We stand firm that Quantum offers no service or support for customers
who opt to upgrade their firmware without first consulting a
qualified technician. The technician shall judge the technical
ability of the customer before offering DSP Tools, and may work with
the product specialist to have the drive sent to Quantum for a FW
upgrade.

There are two different hardware versions for wide drives, type 22962
and type 60059. They can be distinguished via a different secondary
option connector (the one at the back between the two LEDs.)
Type 22962 has a 14-pin option connector, 60059 has 12 pins. Use
firmware A?W14*.FUP for module type 60059, A?WXL*.FUP for all others.

Adaptec 1740 adapter: System hangs during DOS installation

Following a successful DOS format, the DOS installation starts,
the system hangs, and the drive's green Busy LED stays on.
This issue has also been found on the DECpc AXP 150 system running an
Adaptec 1740 adapter.

A feature called ESP_Delay was added on Atlas I drives to work around
a problem with some Adaptec adapters (1740, 1540). The Atlas I was a
little too fast for the Adaptec adapter and we, therefore, added the
ESP_Delay via a mode page bit.

We found that the ESP_Delay time was incorrectly set as we increased
the clock speed on Atlas II. This issue was found on the DECpc AXP
150 system running an Adaptec 1740 adapter.

Firmware version XLXQ1 only increases the delay time. We will still
be shipping into distribution with ESP_Delay off. If a customer has a
problem with the adapter, we will supply the tool to turn on
ESP_Delay instead of loading new firmware.

Adaptec SCSI PCI Ultra 2940U/UW adapter: Serious disk errors under
DOS Xcopy

While running DOS Xcopy (especially with the large files - 1 to 2 MB
in size), the system reports a serious disk error has occurred while
writing to the drive.
This issue occurs on the Adaptec 2940 U/UW with Bios version 1.21.

Adaptec upgraded the Bios on SCSI PCI Ultra 2940U/UW adapter to
version 1.23
Therefore, this issue should be resolved with Adapter 2940U/UW Bios
versions 1.23 or higher.
