Jumper Setting
==============

There are two switches on the main circuit board of this drive.

         +-+-+-+-+-+------- Termination Switch

To provide termination for the last unit, al switches of SW1 should
be set in the ON position. On all other units, all the switches of
SW1 should be set in the OFF position.

*Mark is printed on Printed Circuit Board (PCB).

The control cable allows for a daisy chain connection of up to four
drives.

The switch block has DRIVE SELECT switched off with the "radial"
option selected. Each drive is shipped with the switch block marked
"R" switched on, resulting in the daisy chain operation. In this
case, input and output signals are enabled when the appropriate
DRIVE SELECT line is activated.

When the switch block marked "R" is switched off, all inout and out-
put signals are enabled even if the drive is not selected.

However, the front panel LED will not be on. DRIVE SELECT must be
activate to light the LED.

The drive may be installed in either a horizontal (spindle up) or
vertical plane (on its left or right side).

In any final mounting configuration, insure that the operation of the
four shock mounts which isolate the base casting from the frame is
not restricted.

The drive dissipates approximately 18 watts during normal operation
conditions. This dissipated heat must be removed by adequate
ventilation from the enclosure at a rate that is sufficient to main-
tain the ambient air temperature around the drive at or below 50*C
(122*F). Cooling air is recommended for 6 cfm.
(Screw: 4-M4x0.7 or 4-NO. 6-32 UNC)

When the drive is inserted into the enclosure, 2.5mm (0.1 inch) and
above clearance must be kept.

Drive Connection
----------------
Power must be removed when connecting or disconnecting cables!

Connect the host controller's DC power cable to connector J6 and the
signal cables to connectors J1 and J2.

All control lines are digital in nature (open collector TTL) and
either provide signals to the drive (input) or signals to the host
controller (output).

The data transfer signals are differential in nature and provide data
either to (write) or from (read) the drive.

J1/P1 Connector - Control Signals
---------------------------------
Connection to J1 is via a 34 pin PCB edge connector. The pins are
numbered 1 through 34 with the even pins located on the component
side of the PCB. A key slot is provided between pins 4 and 6.

numbered 1 through 20 with the even pins located on the component
side of the PCB. A key slot is provided between pins 4 and 6.

28 AWG Flat Cable
Maximum Length 6m
Mating Connector 3M P/N 3461-0001 or equivalent

Auto Lock Mechanism
-------------------
Once power is removed from the system, the actuator will move the
head stack to the landing zone, and the actuator lock will be enabled
automatically.

Disk Enclosure and Air Filtration System
----------------------------------------
The HDA assembly is an air tight enclosure containing the actuator
and spindle assembly. The enclosure seals out dust and noise to the
HDA. A breather filter maintains circulation and clean air. Also, the
breathing filter compensates for pressure differences between the
outside ambient pressure and the internal pressure of the HDA.

Frame and Shock Mount
---------------------
The HDA is completely shock mounted to insure resistance to outside
shock and vibration forces.

Spindle
-------
The spindle and drive motor assembly are integrated into one unit, in
order to maximize space. The rotation of the brushless DC motor is
initiated by applying power to the drive. A rotational sensor located
on the PCB maintains the 3600 0.5% rpm rate, anything greater/less
than 0.5% and the power to the spindle will be shut off. The auto-
matic brake is used to stop the spindle motor when the power is
turned off, thus minimizing head wear.

Seek to Shipping Zone
---------------------
The drive is designed with a dedicated parking/shipping zone. When
the power is removed from th edrive the heads are automatically
parked and locked in the parking/shipping zone.

       |Latency msec. avg. | 8.33 |

 Write Precompensation
 ---------------------
When a particular data pattern is written, bit shifting due to the
super-position of the magnetization patterns of adjacent bits can
occur, causing errors. Precompensation is used to prevent this. With
this precompensation, when data is written, the write timing is
switched beforehand to the opposite direction of the data-shift
direction. The duration of the timing for nominal bit position is -
12 ns (early) or +12 ns (late).

In order to provide for a satisfactorily lower error rate for the
drive, the host-system timing for MFM write data may be pre-compen-
sated from 300 tracks.
