Jumper Setting
==============
Master/Slave Selection
----------------------
The interface allows up to two drives (a Master and one Slave) to be
attached to the AT/IDE bus.
+----------------+-------------------------------------+ | Jumpers | | | W2 W1 |Description | +----------------+-------------------------------------+ | CLOSED CLOSED |Drive emulates both Master and Slave | | |(The factory default definition) | +----------------+-------------------------------------+ | CLOSED OPEN |Drive is Master, Slave is present | +----------------+-------------------------------------+ | OPEN CLOSED |Drive is Slave | +----------------+-------------------------------------+ | OPEN OPEN |Drive is Master | +----------------+-------------------------------------+
Drive emulates both Master and Slave:
Specifies that one 2112A can emulate both the Master drive (Drive 0)
and the Slave Drive (Drive 1). This option allows for existing host
systems to utilize the full capacity of the drive.
When the drive is configured as both the Master and the Slave, the
Master's (Drive 0) capacity is set to 1024 logical cylinders, 16
logical heads, and 63 logical sectors. This setting yield 528,482,304
bytes. The Slave's Drive (Drive 1) is set to the remaining storage
on the disk drive.
For this configuration, the recommended drive type setting in the
computer's CMOS memory is as follows:
Drive 0: 1024 logical cylinders, 16 logical heads, 63 logical
sectors
Drive 1: 1010 logical cylinders, 16 logical heads, 63 logical
sectors
Note:
The capacity of the 2112A drive may exceed the capacity that the host
can access. This limitation stems from the communication link between
the DOS and the BIOS. A typical limit is 1024 cylinders, 16 heads,
and 63 sectors. For optimum use of the following options, the BIOS
may need to be modified.
Drive is Master, Slave is present:
Specifies the Master Drive (Drive 0) when two 2112A drives are used
in a system. The other drive is Slave.
Drive is Slave:
Specifies the Slave drive (Drive 1) when two 2112A drives are used in
a system. The other drive is Master.
Drive is Master:
Specifies the Master drive (Drive 0) when one 2112A drive is used in
a system.

Dimensions and Mounting
-----------------------
The 2112A drive uses industry-standard mounting techniques for
3 -inch full-height Winchester disk drives.
The drive is designed such that the outer frame should be hard
mounted to the host equipment; no additional/external shock mounts
should be used.
Recommended orientation is vertical on either side, or horizontal
with the Device Electronics board down; other mounting orientations
may be used provided the ambient air temperature around the drive is
kept at or below 50*C (122*F).
The term "ambient" becomes imprecise when referencing a drive in a
system, since it is difficult to determine where the air temperature
should be measured. To help resolve this confusion, Micropolis
specifies that the maximum HDA casting temperature (regardless of the
air temperature around the drive) is 60*C (140*F). Not exceeding this
temperature will ensure that the head-to-media interface never exceed
its temperature limit.
Mounting Screws
---------------
3 per side 6-32 UNC-2B thru
4 on bottom 6-32 UNC-2B thru
Caution: The mounting screws must be selected so that they do not
penetrate the bottom mounting holes by more than 0.20 inches or the
side mounting holes by more than 0.156 inches.
Screws that are too long will short to PCBA components and/or prevent
proper operation of the shock mount system and may damage the HDA.
Interface Electrical Characteristics
------------------------------------
Interface control, data, and status signals are TTL compatible in
both send and receive directions. Maximum cable length is 18 inches.
The following cable specification are provided to ensure system
integrity.
Driver IOL sink current = 12 milliamps (minimum)
Driver IOH source current is -400 microamps (maximum)
Cable capacitive loading = 200 picofarads (maximum)
Signal Connector J1
-------------------
J1 is a 40-pin connector. The bus interface connection is made via
this connector. Signals on J1 include the 16-bit data bus and control
and address lines.
Recommended Cable: 3M Scotchflex 3302-40 or equivalent.
Mating connector: 3M 3417-7000 or equivalent.
J2 DC Power Connector ---------------------- J2 is a 3-pin, keyed connector. Both +5V and +12V are supplied to the drive via this connector. This power connector is usually used by low-power computer systems.
Mating Connector: MOLEX 5480 or equivalent
J3 DC Power Connector ---------------------- J3 is a 4-pin, keyed, AMP MATE-N-LOCK connector. Both +5V and +12V are supplied to the drive via this connector. This power connector is the industry standard and is used in most applications.
Mating Connector: AMP 1-480424-0 or equivalent
Pins: AMP 350078-4
Suggested Wire Size: 18 AWG
Ground Connector J4
-------------------
3/16-inch spade lug J4 is provided for grounding. Systems
characteristics determine proper ground connection.
Mating connector: AMP 60972-2 or equivalent.
Adjustments and Maintenance
---------------------------
2112A drives requires no adjustments or periodic maintenance;
additionally, no mechanical adjustments are required to prepare a
system for handling or shipment.
Field-Replacable Components
---------------------------
The concept of repair by replacement of complete functional
components is utilized in the 2112A, resulting in an MTTR of less
than 15 minutes.
MICROPL. 2112A PRODUCT DESCRIPTION 135814 REV. A
The Micropolis 2112A high-performance, 3 -inch, full-height
Rigid Disk Drive provides OEMs with high-speed, random access data
storage and meet the needs of diverse applications environment.
The drive is compatible with the proposed ANSI ATA (AT Attachment)
specification.
How to Access Large Capacity IDE Disk Driver
--------------------------------------------
Many disk drive users think that the IDE interface cannot be used
with high capacity disk drives. This is absolutely not so!
The Disk Operating System (DOS) provides for the file system stored
in the disk drive. The application programs access the disk drives
by activating specific DOS interrupts. The DOS interrupt service
program activates the DOS disk drive device driver that services disk
access request. The DOS driver activates the BIOS interrupt 13H. The
BIOS program services disk access request by activating the disk
drive IDE interface commands.
The ONTRACK MANAGER utility software including the following
features:
a. Automated installation and setup
b. Driver software for single drive 1 GB operation
c. Read/Write multiple sector performance driver
