The drive will operate in all axis (6 directions).

Recommended Mounting Configuration
----------------------------------
The Maxtor 7000 Series drive design allows greater shock tolerance
than that afforded by larger, heavier drives.

The drive may be mounted in any attitude. Mount the drive by using
6-32 screws with 1/8" maximum penetration. Allow adequate ventilation
to the drive to ensure reliable operation over the operating
temperature range.

Host Equipment
--------------
The 7000 Series drives are built to meet the highest standards of
quality. But like all system peripherals, they depend on host
equipment for adequate power and environment in order to realize
their full performance potential and to operate in compliance wit
applicable industry and governmental regulations. Special attention
must be given to: safety, power distribution, shielding, audible
noise control, temperature regulation, and electrostatic discharge.

32K Look-Ahead Cache
--------------------
Caching with look-ahead read decreases access time to sequential data
in the drive by temporarily placing small amounts of data in high
speed memory. Cache may contain from 1 to 36 sectors (the size of one
physical track). To maximize performance, no head switching or seek-
ing occurs during look-ahead.

How Look-ahead Cache Functions
------------------------------
In the absence of an error, corrected data, or an interrupt command,
the drive caches not only requested sectors, but "look-ahead" and
caches all remaining physical 36 sectors on the current track. The
"look-ahead" feature prepares the drive to transfer cached data when
the host request it (preventing access time delays). Commands are
interrupt driven, so if the drive is performing a look-ahead cache
when a command is received, it will stop caching and process the
command. Consequently, look-ahead caching does not add overhead to
command processing.

Resets and Write or Write Long commands to any of the cached sectors
invalidate the whole cache.

To prevent hidden retries from occurring when retries are off, none
are executed for any cached sectors.

Sector on a track are cached until an error occurs, until corrected
data is read, or until a host command interrupts the drive.

Power Connector
---------------
Power is applied through:

J3, a 4-pin connector (Molex P/N 15-24-4048; AMP PN 1-480424-0)

OR

J7, a 3-pin connector.

Never force these polarized connectors into place.

Interface Connector
-------------------
The integrated drive interfaces to the host computer via a 40 pin
keyed ribbon cable connector which should not exceed 24"in length.

Power Management
----------------
The 7000 Series drives have a six power consumption modes. There are
four operational modes (spin-up, seek, read/write, and idle), and
two low power modes (standby and sleep).

Dual Power Connection
---------------------
Each 7000 Series drive has one 3 pin and one 4 pin power connector;
therefore, a single drive model may be used for both desktop and
portable systems applications.

Air Filtration System
---------------------
All 7000 Series drives are designed to operate in a typical
office environment with minimal environmental control. Over the life
of the drive, a 0.3 micron filter and breather filter (located within
the HDA) maintain a clean environment to the heads and disks.

Read/Write Electronics
----------------------
An integrated circuit mounted within the sealed enclosure (near the
read/write heads) provides one of four head selection (depending on
the model), read preamplification, and write drive circuitry.

Read/Write Heads and Disks
--------------------------
Two or four, low-mass, low-force minicomposite metal-in-GAP (MIG)
read/write heads record data on the 3.5" diameter disk(s). Maxtor
uses a sputterred thin-film media on all disks for 7000 Series
drives.

Automatic Headpark and Lock
---------------------------
Immediately following power-down, dynamic braking of the spinning
disks delays momentarily and lets the heads move to an inner
mechanical stop. A small fixed magnet holds the heads in place as the
disk spin down. The heads are released only when power is again
applied.

Acoustic Noise
--------------
Measurements made in idle (spinning) on-track mode.

      1 meter perpendicular to top cover   39 dBA (typical)
      Sound power (per ISO/DIS 7779)       4.9 bel (typical)

Magnetic Field
--------------
The externally induced magnetic flux density may not exceed 6 gauss
as measured at the disk surface.

Drive Meachanism
----------------
A brushless DC direct-drive motor rotates the spindle at 3,703 rpm
( 0.1%).

The dynamically balanced motor/spindle assembly ensures minimal
mechanical runout of the disks. A dynamic brake provides a fast
stop to the spindle motor upon power removal. The speed tolerance
includes motor performance and motor circuit tolerances.

Dual Drive Support
------------------
Two drives may be accessed via a common interface cable, using the
same range of I/O addresses. The drives are jumpered as drive 0 or 1,
and are selected by the drive select bit in the Drive/Head register
task file.

All Task File registers are written in parallel to both drives. The
interface processor on each drive decides whether a command written
to it should be executed; this depends on the type of command and
which drive is selected. Only the drive selectedexecutes the command
and activates the data bus in response to host I/O reads; the drive
not selected remains inactive.

A master/slave relationship exists between the two drives: drive 0
is the master, and drive 1 the slave.

In response to the Execute Diagnostics command, both drives execute
diagnostics; the slave reports its status to the master via the
-PDIAG line. The master combines the slave's status with its own, and
then reports to the host.

Drive Type
----------
Drive type numbers for a given set of head/cylinder parameters may
vary from one computer system to another. Jumper setting parameters
must equal or exceed the drive type parameters recommended by the
system documentation.

Introduction
------------
The Maxtor 7040A and 7080A disk drives are 1" high, 3 " random access
storage devices. Maxtor engineers have applied recent advances in
hard drive technology to the design and manufacture of the 7000
Series drives; reduced size and increased durability make them
especially well suited to notebook, laptop, and desktop applications.

Sector Address Translation
--------------------------
The 7040A and 7080A drives support translation between the drive's
physical parameters and the equivalent logical address in the BIOS
drive type table.

Defect and Error Management
---------------------------
The 7040A and 7080A employ a "sector push-down" method of defect
management. Defects are pushed down into spare sectors located at the
end (the maximum cylinder) of the disk.
(The 7040A contains 63 spare sectors for defect management; the
7080A, 126.)

SRAM Buffer Use with Defect Management
--------------------------------------
The defect list resides permanently on the drive's history cylinder.
(The 7040A contains 4 copies of this list; the 7080A, 8 copies.)

For verification purposes, every copy contains ECC and checksum. Upon
drive power up, the defect list loads from the history cylinder into
the SRAM buffer. As the list enters the buffer, the checksum is
recalculated to verify that the checksum from the list is correct.

If discrepancies arise, attempts are made to read copies of the
defect list within the history cylinder. If there are no
discrepancies, the defect list is stored in the drive's buffer and a
copy of the checksum is entered into the microprocessor RAM. Later,
during idle times of disk drive operation, the checksum in micro-
processor RAM is used to confirm the defect list's validity.

Spindle Speed and Latency
-------------------------
Maximum latency time is 16 milliseconds, based on a minimum disk
speed of 3,699 rpm.

Power Sequencing
----------------
Power sequencing is not required for the 7040A and 7080A. The drives
protect against inadvertent writing during power up and power down.

Daisy chain operation requires that power be maintained on the
terminated unit to ensure proper termination of the peripherals I/O
cables.

General

MAXTOR IDE INSTALLATION

            INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR AN IDE DRIVE
            ---------------------------------------
 1. Install a 40 pin Data Cable ensuring that pin 1, which can be
    identified by the striped edge of the cable, is closest to the
    power connector on the drive.

2. Install a DC power cable to the back of the drive.

 3. Verify the jumper configurations for Master/Slave operation
    (Note:  Master will be the bootable drive. The slave will not
    be bootable.) Also make sure the existing C: drive is jumped
    to be the Master in a two drive system, not the only drive in
    the system.

4. Apply power to the computer.

 4a. When memory test is complete go into your system's Standard
     CMOS set-up.
     (Note: There are various ways to get into CMOS set-up, please
     refer to system's manual for instructions.)

 4b. If your system's BIOS supports a user programmable drive
     type, program the BIOS with the default parameters of your
     drive. If your system does not support a user programmable
     drive type choose parameters that closely match but do not
     exceed the drives MegaByte capacity. Escape from set-up
     then choose write to CMOS and exit.

 5. Boot from a DOS diskette that has FDISK.EXE and FORMAT.COM on
    it. At the A> prompt type in FDISK. At the menu options select
    option 1 to create a DOS partition. Another menu will appear
    and from those options choose 1 to create a Primary DOS
    partition. Select yes to make 1 large partition and it will
    automatically become active. Then escape from FDISK.

 6. At the A> prompt type in FORMAT C:/S This does a high-level
    format on the drive and transfers the system files in order for
    the drive to be bootable. (Note: IDE drives are low-level
    formatted from the manufacturer and only need a high-level
    format).

    To configure the drive as a slave drive repeat steps 1-4 and
    proceed with steps 5a. and 6a. as follows:

  5a. At the C> prompt type in FDISK. When the menu options appear
      select option 5 to switch to the second drive. Enter fixed
      disk drive number 2. Then choose option 1 to create a DOS
      partition, then select option 1 again to create a Primary DOS
      partition or option 2 to create an Extended DOS partition.
      (Note: C and D drives will always be the Primary partitions
      but only the Primary partition on C: will have a status of
      active).

  6a. Proceed with a high-level format on the drive by typing FORMAT
      D: (Note: Make sure the correct drive letter has been selected
      for format).

 7. The drive is now bootable. As a test remove the DOS diskette
    from A and press reset to reboot the computer,  a  C> should be
    displayed, the drive is now ready for operation.
