Jumper Settings
================
The user must not change the setting of terminals not described in
this section. Do not change setting statuses set at factory shipment.

Do not change the setting of terminals except CN3/CN9 or do not con-
nect or disconnect the SCSI terminating resistor modul when power is
turning on.

Set the response method against the received command when the IDD

Set the mode of the ACK signal response wait time monitoring in the
INFORMATION TRANSFER phase, the response wait time monitoring in the
RESELECTION phase, and number of retries. THis mode is valid only
when the time monitoring is enabled by the setting terminal CN3/CN9.

Set the display contents of data posted to the initiator from the IDD
with the INQUIRY command according to table. Select one of the modes
depending on the system software requirements.

When the SCSI/CCS mode is selected, parameters transferred by the
MODE command are as follows:

 a) Page code 3F (all pages equipped in the IDD are transferred)
    1. Page 1 and page 8 are not transferred.
    2. Page 1, page 2, and page 4 are tranferred with the specified
       length of CCS.

 b) When the page 1, page 2 or page 4 is specified individually, it is
    transferred with the specified length of CCS.

 c) When the page 7 or page 8 is specified individually, it is trans-
    ferred with the specified length of SCSI-2.

 d) For the recovery parameter of the VERIFY, the recovery parameter
    in page 1 is used.

When the SCSI-1/CCS mode is selected and the REQUEST SENSE command is
issued with specifying the transfer byte length to 0, the IDD trans-
feres the 4-byte sense data.

CNH2 Message modes setting
---------------------------
Set the issuance mode of the SAVE DATA POINTER message sent to the
initiator from the IDD.

 x      3-4 CLOSE    To disconnect the SCSI bus after execution of
                     data transfer (in DATA IN or DATA OUT phase),
                     issue the SAVE DATA POINTER message and then
                     disconnect the SCSI bus even after the number of
                     all bytes specified with the command is trans-
                     fered.
        3-4 OPEN     To disconnect the SCSI bus before executed of the
                     STATUS phase after the number of all bytes speci-
                     fied with the command is transfered (in DATA IN
                     or DATA OUT phase), do not issue the SAVE DATA
                     POINTER message.

When disconnecting of the SCSI bus after SAVE DATA POINTER message
issuance is set, the processing time for message transmission in-
creases but the data pointer restored with the re-connection proces-
sing to execute the STATUS phase reflects the final status of data
transfer with the command.

CNH2 Report mode of MODE SELECT parameter
------------------------------------------
Set whetherthe error is reported to MODE SELECT command when the IDD
applies the parameter rounding process (rounding up or down) to the
parameter specified by the INIT during MODE SELECT command execution.

 x      5-6 CLOSE    GOOD status is reported to even the MODE SELECT
                     command to which the parameter rounding process
                     was applied.
        5-6 OPEN     CHECK CONDITION status is reported to the MODE
                     SELECT command to which the parameter rounding
                     process was applied. Sense key in the sense data
                     indicates RECOVERED ERROR [=1] and the sense code
                     indicates Rounded parameter [=37-00].

CNH2 PER default values
------------------------
Set the default value of the PER (post error) flag of the read/write
error recovery parameter (page code = 1) and verify error recovery
parameter (page code = 7) of the MODE SELECT parameter.

The MODE SELECT parameter value specific to the user can be saved on
the disk with the MODE SELECT command specification. There are no
MODE SELECT parameter save values on the IDD when the IDD is shipped
from the factory. The value set with the terminal is used as the ini-
tial value of PER flag when there are no saved values. When a saved
value is generated by the user, the IDD reads it when power is turned
on and operates using that value.

 CNH2  Motor start mode
 ----------------------

        9-10 OPEN    Starting the motor is controlled with the START/
                     STOP command.

Set how to start the IDD spindle motor. This setting only determines
the operation mode when power is turned on. Stopping or restarting
the spindle motor is controlled with the START/STOP UNIT command for
both modes.

Synchronous mode data transfer
------------------------------
Set whethersynchronous data transfer is used. To enable synchronous
mode transfer, set the allowable scope of the maximum transfer rate

This setting does not affect asynchronous mode transfer.

 When synchronous mode transfer is disabled, the IDD operates as
 follows.
   When the SYNCHRONOUS DATA TRANSFER REQUEST message is sent from the
   INIT, the IDD replys to that message and the DATA IN and the DATA
   OUT phases of the SCSI bus can be executed in synchronous mode.
   The IDD does not send the SYNCHRONOUS DATA TRANSFER REQUEST message
   to the INIT.

The maximum data transfer rate in synchronous mode is determined when
the SYNCHRONOUS DATA TRANSFER REQUEST message is excahnged between
the IDD and INIT.
The INIT must determine the parameter sent to the IDD when the mes-
sage is exchanged in consideration of the signal transfer character-
istics of the system SCSI bus and the data reception capacity of the
INIT.
The IDD can transfer up to 4.8 MB/s in synchronous mode. However,
since the configuration of the SCSI bus and its transfer
characteristics differ depending on the system, the maximum
transfer rate in which data can be transfered in a stable condition
must be determined for each system.

When 3 to 4.8 MB/s synchronous mode transfer is disabled with this
terminal, the IDD surpresses the data transfer rate to 2.67 MB/s or
less when the SYNCHRONOUS DATA TRANSFER REQUEST message is exchanged.
When 3 to 4.8 MB/s synchronous mode transfer is enabled,
up to 4 MB/s of data can be transfered.
At any rate, the maximum data transfer rate determined when the mes-
sage is exchanged does not exceed the value in the parameter of the
SYNCHRONOUS DATA TRANSFER REQUEST message declared by the initiator.
Therefore, when the initiator declares the parameter within the
allowable scope of the system, 3 to 4.8 MB/s synchronous mode
transfer is enabled with this plug.

For reference, the IDD data transfer rate in synchronous mode and the
restrictions in the system configuration of the SCSI bus are shown
below. The following values are rough standards. The values must be
evaluated for each system.

Generally, the destrictions of the system configuration need not be
considered. When up to eigth SCSI devices connect to the SCSI cable
(up to 25m), data can be transfered at 4.8 MB/s.

 CNH4 SCSI terminating resistor power

The table shows, how to supply power to the IDD SCSI terminating re-
sistor module and how to use TERMPWR lines on the SCSI bus. When the
IDD connects to a position other than at either end of the SCSI cable
do not mount the terminating resistor modules on the IDD.

CN3/CN9 Setting terminals
-------------------------
Setting of CN3/CN9 can be changed when power is turning on. The SCSI
ID is valid after power is turned on again or the SCSI bus is reset.

These terminals can be used as a connector for the external operator
panel.

 Some setting functions are assigned on the same pins of both CN3/CN9.
 CLOSE and OPEN in this explanation of this section have following
 meaning:
           CLOSE  The short plug is mounted between specified pins
                  on CN3 or CN9.
           OPEN   The short plug is removed from between specified
                  pins on both CN3 and CN9.

The operator panel for setting features assigned on CN3/CN9 exter-
nally can be connected to CN3 or CN9.

 CN3/CN9  Offline self-diagnostics

Starting and stopping IDD offline self-diagnosis is set as listed in

This signal is used with an external write protect switch. As des-
cribed, the write protect function is enabled by shortening the

CN7 External LED
----------------
These signals on pin 1 and pin 4 actuate the external LED as same as
LED on front panel of the disk drive. The indication can be changed
with a setting terminal. (CNH1 pin 1-2)

There are three possible installation directions, and the mounting
angle must be 5* from the horizontal.

Do not install the PCA on the top!

Environmental requirements
--------------------------
The IDD must conform to the environmental requirements. When the IDD
is operating, the ambient temperature measured 3cm from the disk en-
closure (DE) surface and from the PCA surface must satisfy the spe-
cified requirement. For the DE surface temperature at operating, the
contact temperature at the measurement point must satisfy the speci-
fied requirement.

Multi-drive connection
----------------------
The maximum number of SCSI devices that can be connected to the SCSI
bus is 8, including the host adapter, IDD, and other SCSI equipment.

 SCSI cable
 ----------
 The maximum length of SCSI cable is as follows. If more than one SCSI
 device is connected, the total cable length must not exceed the fol-
 lowing:
          Cable length for single ended:       6m Max.
          Cable length for differential ended: 25m Max.

The use of a 25-pair twisted cable satisfying the following require-
ments is recommended:

    Single ended type: Conductor size: 28 American Wire Gauge (AWG)
                                       or bigger
                       Characteristic Impedance: 100 to 132

    Differential type: Conductor size: 28 AWG or bigger
                       Characteristic Impedance: 100 to 122

 Each pair of wires in the 25-pair twisted cable must be connected to
 pins n and n+1 (where n is an odd number) on the interface connector.
 Cables having an identical impedance must be use on the same SCSI bus
 to reduce signal reflection and maintain transmission characteristics

When a SCSI device is connected to the SCSI cable except at either
end of the cable, connection to the SCSI connector must be at a
branchpoint of the cable. If a SCSI device is connected to one end of
the SCSI bus, no cable should be connected after the last SCSI device
except when the cable has a terminating resistor.

Check, that system power is off before connecting or disconnecting
cables!

Be carefull of the insertion directions of the SCSI connectors. With
the system in which terminating resistor power is supplied via the
SCSI cable, if the drive power is turned on, the overcurrent protec-
tion fuse of the terminating resistor power supplier may be blown or
the cable may be burnt if overcurrent protection is not provided.

Power cable
-----------
IDDs must be star-connected to the DC power sypply (one to one con-
nection) to reduce the influence of load variations.

Signal ground connector
-----------------------
For DC ground, an SG terminal is mounted on the rear of the drive.
A DC ground cable may be installed depending on the system require-
ments. This cable is generally connected to the ground of the power
supply unit. Connection between more than one IDD may be in a daisy
chain.

Terminator
----------
All SCSI devices on one bus are daisy-chained with a SCSI cable. A
terminating resistor must be mounted in the SCSI device at each end
of the SCSI cable.
Since a SCSI terminating resistor module is mounted in the IDD on
shipment, it must be removed when the IDD is not connected at either
end of the SCSI cable. Also, a method for the power supply to the
terminating resistor must be selected with the setting terminal on
the IDD.

When connecting the IDD to either end of the SCSI cable, do not de-
mount the terminating resistor module.
When connecting the IDD to a position other than both ends of the
SCSI cable, demount terminating resistor modules.

When removing the terminating resistor module from the socket, be
careful not to damage the resistor module pins, mount socket and
contiguous parts.
When mounting the terminating resistor moudle, check the mounting
direction and whetherthe module is fixed.

Noise filter
------------
To eliminate AC line noise, a noise filter should be installed at the
AC input terminal on the IDD power supply unit.
Attenuation: 40 dB or more at 10 MHz.

External operator panel connector
---------------------------------
Two types of connectors for the external operator panel are provided
on the IDD. They allow connection of an external write protect switch
a LED on the front panel and a SCSI ID setting switch.

Some signals are assigned on the same pins of both CN3 and CN9.

When no external operator panel is connected to the IDD, CN3 and CN9
are used for setting terminal of SCSI ID. When the IDD is shipped
from the factory, the short plugs are mounted between all even num-
bered and add numbered pins of CN9 and no short plug is mounted on
CN3.

When the external operator panel is connected to CN3 or CN9, pay
attention to the following items:
CN3 and CN9 have a physical interchangeability. So, the external
operator panel can be connected either connector.
When the external operator panel is connected to CN9, all short plugs
on CN9 must be removed. However, pins on CN3 corresponding to the
signal set on the external operator panel must be opened. When there
is a signal not to set on the external operator panel, the state of
that signal must be set on CN3 using the short plug. The removed
short plug on CN9 can be used for setting the state.
When the external operator panel is connected to CN3, the short plug
on CN9 corresponding to the signal set on the external operator panel
must be removed. When there is a signal not to set on the external
operator panel, the state of that signal must be set on CN9 using the
short plug.

 The write protect function is enabled by shortening pin 2 and pin 3
 of CN7. These terminal should not be used for any purpose other than
 the external write protect switch.

The output signals of pin 1 and pin 4 of CN7 actuate the external LED
as same as LED on the front panel of the disk drive. The indication
can be changed with a setting terminal.

Do not connect or disconnect jumpers after power is on except CN3/CN9
terminals!
Setting of CN3/CN9 can be changed when power is on. The SCSI ID
setting is valid after power is turned on again or the SCSI bus is
reset.

Confirming initial operations
-----------------------------
Do not move the drive when power is turned on!

 1. Initial operation in the case where the jumper is set so that
    motor starts at power-on.

    1. When power is turned on, the IDD executes initial self-diag-
       nosis.
    2. If an error is detected in the initial self-diagnosis, the LED
       on the front panel blinks. The spindle motor may or may not
       start rotating in this stage.
    3. When the LED display requirements are set to "READY status",
       the LED on the front panel lights 20 seconds after power is
       turned on. At this time, the LED on the front panel blinks
       while the IDD reads "system information" from the system space
       on the disk.
    4. When the LED display requirements are set to "in connection
       with SCSI bus", the LED on the front panel remains off (when
       the initiator accesses the IDD via the SCSI bus, the LED
       lights). However, the disk drive enters the READY status in 20
       seconds after power is turned on. At this time, the IDD reads
       "system information" as in step 3.

 2. Initial operation in the case where the jumper is removed so that
    motor starts with a START/STOP command.

    1. When power is turned on, the IDD executes initial self-diag-
       nosis.
    2. If an error is detected in the initial self-diagnosis, the LED
       on the front panel blinks.
    3. The spindle motor does not start rotation until the START/STOP
       UNIT command for the start is issued. The INIT needs to issue
       the START/STOP UNIT command to start the spindle motor.
    4. The disk drive enters the READY status 20 seconds after the
       START/STOP UNIT command is issued. At this time, the IDD reads
       "system information" from the system space on the disk.
    5. When the LED requirements are set to "READY status", the LED on
       the front panel ligths as in step 4. However, the LED ligths in
       an instant while "system information" is being read.
    6. When the LED display requirements are set to "in connection
       with SCSI bus", the following occurs:
       * When disconnection processing is enabled with the START/STOP
       UNIT command (Immed=0), the LED blinks once in steps 3 and 4.
       * When disconnection processing is disabled with the START/STOP
       UNIT command (Immed=0), the LED lights when the command is
       issued in step 3 and it is turned off when step 4 is completed.

3. Items to check if an error occurs.

    * Check that cables are mounted correctly.
    * Check that power and voltages are supplied correctly.
    * Check the setting of each jumper setting terminal. The initial
      operation depends on the setting of the motor start mode and LED
      display requirements.
    * If an error is detected in initial self-diagnosis, the LED on
      the front panel blinks. In this case, it is recommended to issue
      the REQUEST SENSE command from the initiator (host system) to
      obtain information (sense data) for error analysis.

    When the LED display requirements are set to "READY status", the
    LED is turned off while the drive continues the seek operations.
    However, since the LED is turned off for only one blink, the LED
    may seem to be turned on and off or not turned off at all.

    When the LED display requirements are set to "in connection with
    SCSI bus", the LED on the front panel lights only when the IDD is
    connected to the SCSI bus. Howerver, in some commands or when
    "disconnection from the bus" is enabled, the LED may only be
    turned on for an instant. Therefore it may seem that the LED
    blinks or the LED remains off.

    Since the IDD has the automatic readjustment function of positi-
    oning (seek) control, it automatically executes the adjustment
    operations with seek at specific intervals from power on (first
    adjustment: 2 minutes after power on). When the LED display re-
    quirements are set to "READY status", the LED on the front panel
    blinks during the adjustment.

Removing drives
---------------
Take the drive offline.

Disconnect system power before removing the drive. Do not remove
mounting screws holding the cables and drive while power is on.

Do not move the drive until it completely stops (15 seconds after
spindle motor is stopped with START/STOP UNIT command or after
power is turned off).

------------
The number of allowable media defects are 150 and less.
The maximum defect length is 8 bytes.

 SCSI/CCS standard
 -----------------
 The IDD provides not only SCSI basic functions but also the following
 features:
                    Arbitration
                    Disconnection/reselection
                    Data bus parity
                    Command set which meets the logical specification
                    of the SCSI CCS requirements.

The SCSI command can manipulate data through logical block addressing
regardless of physical characteristics of the disk drive. This allows
software to accommodate future expansion of system functions.

High speed data transfer
------------------------
The data transfer rate on the SCSI bus is 2.0 MB/s maximum in asyn-
chronous mode and 4.8 MB/s maximum in synchronous mode. Such a high
data transfer rate on the SCSI bus can be usefull with the large
capacity buffer in the IDD.

The maximum data transfer rate in asynchronous mode may be limited by
the response time of initiator and the length of SCSI bus length.

The maximum data transfer rate in synchronous mode on the
single-ended SCSI bus may be limited by the cable length and
transmission characteristics of the SCSI bus.

256KB data buffer
-----------------
Data is transfered between SCSI bus and disk media through the embed-
ded 256KB data buffer in the IDD.

Since the initiator can control the disconnect/reconnect timing on
the SCSI bus by specifying the condition of stored data to the data
buffer or empty condition of the data buffer, the initiator can
perform the effective input/output operations with utilizing high
data transfer capability of the SCSI bus regardless of actual data
transfer rate of the disk drive.

Read-Ahead cache feature
------------------------
After executing the READ command, the IDD reads automatically and
stores (prefetches) the subsequent data blocks into the data buffer
(Read-Ahead caching).
The high speed sequential data access can be archieved by transfering
the data from the data buffer without reaccessing the disk in case
the subsequent command requests the prefetched data blocks.

Command stack feature
---------------------
The IDD has a command stack feature corresponding to up to 7 initia-
tors. Therefore, the IDD can accept and stack an input/output command
issued by another initiator even if the IDD is executing another
command. The stack command is retrieved and executed in stacked order
after the present command has completed.

Landing zone
------------
The actuator positions heads on the innermost landing zones over the
disk when the power is off or the spindle motor is stopped.

SCSI bus configuration
----------------------
Up to eight SCSI devices can be connected to the SCSI bus, with any
combination of the SCSI devices that operate as initiator and that
operate as target.

Each SCSI device on the bus has its own unique address (SCSI-ID: #n).
For input/output operation, a peripheral device attached to the SCSI
bus that operates as target is addressed in unit called as logical
unit. A unique address (LUN: logical unit number) is assigned for
each logical unit.

The initiator selects one SCSI device by specifying that SCSI ID,
then specifies the LUN to select the peripheral device for
input/output operation.

 The IDD is constructed so that the whole volume of disk drive is a
 single logical unit, the selectable numbers of SCSI ID and LIN are as
 follows:

                     LUN:      0 (fixed)

Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)
---------------------------------
The estimated MTBF of the IDD during its life time is 200,000 hours
after an initial 3-month period.

Mean Time To Repair (MTTR)
--------------------------
MTTR is the average time taken ba a well-trined service mechanic to
diagnose and repair a drive malfunction. The drive is designed for a
MTTR of 30 minutes or less.

Service life
------------
Overhaul of the drive is not required for the first five years is
handled correctly.

Data security at power failure
------------------------------
Integrity of the data on the disk is guaranteed against all forms of
DC power failure except on blocks where a write operation was being
performed. The above does not applied to formatting disks or
assigning alternate blocks.
