- SCSI ID 7 is typically used by the Host Adapter. The drive may be shipped with the SCSI ID set to 7 ensure that a sufficient quantity (3) jumper plugs are available for you to configure the SCSI ID as you desire. You should save any extra jumper plugs in case you need them later.
- Host Adapter for PC (DOS) applications typically expect the hard disks to reside at SCSI ID 0 or 1. Check your Host Adapter documentation to determine which SCSI ID should be selected.
Terminating the SCSI Bus
------------------------
Remove the terminators from all SCSI devices attached to the SCSI bus
other than those at each end of the bus. These drives provide on-
board alternative 2 activ etermination. Active termination should be
used at both ends of the SCSI bus if the host adapter supports FAST
SCSI 2 data transfers. Other SCSI devices without provision for
active termination should be placed in the middle of the SCSI bus.

The drive will operate in all axis (6 directions).
Mounting the Drive
------------------
You can mount the drive either vertically or horizontally. The drive
will meet all performance specifications when mounted at any orienta-
tion.
CAUTION
The surface(s) on which you mount the drive should be flat and
paralled to prevent uneven pressure on the drive. Mounting the drive
on an uneven surface could cause the drive's base to deform, degrad-
ing drive performance.
CAUTION
When using the side mounting holes, verify the screw length to ensure
clearance from the drive's printed circuit board before tightening
the screws.
Electrical Description
----------------------
Termination
This drive provides on-board Alternative 2 active termination for the
SCSI bus. The termination resistors, which are contained in two
single inline packs (SIPs) should be removed from the drive unless it
is a SCSI device at the physical end of the bus.
Output Characteristics
----------------------
Each signal driven by the drive has the following output
characteristics when measured at the drive connector:
Signal Assertion 0.0 VDC to 0.4 VDC
Minimum Driver Output Capability 48 ma (sinking) at 0.5 VDC
Signal Negation 2.5 VDC to 5.25 VDC
Input Characteristics
---------------------
Each signal received by the drive must have the following input
characteristics when measured at the drive connector:
Signal Assertion 0.0 VDC to 0.8 VDC
Maximum Total Input Load -0.4 ma at 0.4 VDC
Signal False 2.0 VDC to 5.25 VDC
Terminator Power
----------------
Termination power (TERMPWR) is supplied through a diode to prevent
the backflow of power to the drive. TERMPWR has the characteristic as
described in the following table.
Supply voltage +4.25VDC to +5.25VDC Minimum source drive capability Up to 900 mA Maximum sink capability 10ma
Cable Requirements
------------------
A 50-conductor cable no more than 6 meters (19.68 inches) cumulative
length with at least 28 AWG wire and a characteristic impedance of
90 to 140 ohms (132 ohms nominal) is required. In systems that use
the fast synchronous transfer option, the cable should meet the
additional requirements shown in the following table.
Signal Attenuation 0.095 dB maximum per meter at 5MHz
Pair-toPair Propagation Delay
Delta 0.20 ns max. per meter
DC Resistance 0.230 ohms max. per meter
Connector Requirements
----------------------
The connector on the drive is a 50-position header that consists of
two rows of 25 male pins on 0.100 inch centers. The mating connector
is a SCSI-2 non-shielded Alternative 1 A-cable connector.
Attaching a Data Cable to the Drive
-----------------------------------
CAUTION: Particulary when used with a FAST SCSI 2 Host:
- Do not route the data cable next to the drive PCB or any other high frequency or large current switching signals. Improper drive operation can result from improper cable routing.
- Cable stubs should not exceed 0.1 meter (4 inches).
- There should be 0.3 meters (12 inches) of cable between drives.
- Do not tightly bundle excess length offlat cable against each other, because this promotes cross-coupling of signals on the cable. Use spacers to maintain a 0.050 in. (1.27 mm) gap between cable runs.
- Do not clamp the cable tightly against a metal chassis since this will degrade the signal. Use spacers or a non-flammable insulation material to maintain the gap between the chassis and the cable.
Attaching Power to the Drive
----------------------------
CAUTION
Do not route the power cable next to the drive PCB or any other high
frequency or large current switching signals. Improper drive
operation can result from improper cable routing.

Overview of the Drives
----------------------
The Conner Filepro CFA-170S and CFA-340S are high performance, low-
profile hard disk drives that are designed to operate in a system
with a Small Computer System Interface (SCSI). The command set is
SCSI-2 compatible. The drives are actually two versions of the same
basic mechanism.
Features of the Drive
---------------------
- Can be installed in a wide range of host systems
- Supports SCSI-2 interface and commonly used SCSI-2 commands
- High performance rotary voice coil actuator with embedded servo system
- One-of-seven run-length limited code
- High shock resistance
- Sealed head/disk assembly
- Internal air filtration
- Low power consumption
- Automatic actuator latch over data-free landing zone during shut- down mode or power down
- Microprocessor-controlled diagnostic routines are automatically executed at start-up
- 64K buffer
- Reed-Solomon error detection and correction with on-the-fly single- burst correction
- Automatic error correction and retries, ECC on-the-fly
- 512-byte block size
- 10 MB/s synchronous or 5.0 MB/s asynchronous data transfer
- Read look-ahead buffering
Drive Motor and Spindle
-----------------------
A brushless DC direct-drive motor assembly is mounted on the drive's
base. The motor rotates the drive's spindle at 4,011 RPM. The motor/
spindle assembly is dynamically balanced to provide minimal
mechanical runout to the disks. A dynamic brake is used to provide a
fast stop to the spindle motor and return the heads to the landing
zone when power is removed.
Firmware
--------
The drive's firmware includes a command set that the host uses to
control the drive. The command set allows the host to request the
following types for actions:
- report drive status
- seek a specific point on the disk
- read and write data.
Error Correction
----------------
The drive uses a Reed-Solomon code to perform error detection and
correction. For each 512-byte block, the software error correction
poilynomial is capable of correcting:
- One error burst with of up to 22 bits
- Two error bursts of up to 11 bits each
Single bursts of 11 bits or less are corrected on the fly (OTF) with
no performance degradation.
Magnetic Field
--------------
The disk drive will meet its specified performance while operating in
the presence of an externally-produced magnetic field under the
following conditions:
Frequency Field Intensity
DC 6 gauss
To 700 kHz 7 milligauss
700 kHz to 1.5 MHz 3 milligauss
Acoustic Noise
--------------
The sound pressure level will not exceed 40 dBA in Idle Mode at a
distance of 1 meter from the drive.
