Jumper Setting
==============

TERMPWR (Terminator Power)
--------------------------
Generally, the host is the only device on the SCSI bus required to
provide TERMPWR for the bus. To ensure that there is a sufficient
level of power along the entire SCSI bus, Digital Equipment
Corporation recommends that all devices on the SCSI bus supply
TERMPWR (if they are capable). SCSI devices are protected by a diode
or similar semiconductor to prevent back flow of the terminator
power when more than one device supplies this power.

SCSI Bus Termination
--------------------
Both ends of the SCSI bus cable must be terminated. One end is
terminated at the host. The other end must be terminated by the last
SCSI device on the SCSI bus.

When this drive is the last device on the SCSI bus, configure the
drive to enable active termination.

SCSI Bus Termination - DSP5300/5300W/5350/5350W/5400/5400W
----------------------------------------------------------
DSP5300/5300W/5350/5350W/5400/5400W drives contain internal
components to provide active termination of the SCSI bus.

If active termination not required for this drive, make sure that the
jumper is not installed.

SCSI ID (Address) Selection
---------------------------
Each device on the SCSI bus must have a unique SCSI ID number
assigned to it. ID number for DSP5300/5350/5400 drives
are from 0 through 7. For DSP5300W/5350W/5400W drives, the ID numbers
range from 0 through 15 (wide SCSI). The SCSI ID is configured by
placing jumpers across the referenced pins on the Option connector.

Configure Optional Features
---------------------------
CAUTION
The 5-volt signals of two or more drives should not be connected
together or to any other current source by using the Option
connector. Doing so may cause drive malfunction or component damage.

Except when connecting several drives together for a spindle
synchronization application, do not connect the ground signals of two
or more drives together or to any other current source using the
Option connector. Doing so may introduce ground loop problems.

The following optional features can be configured according to your
system requirements. They include:

- On-Board Busy and Fault LEDs

- Notification of AC power failure

- Spindle synchronization

- Write protection

- Spin delay

On-Board Busy and Fault LED Indicators
--------------------------------------
The drive's on-board Busy and Fault LED indicators are operational
only when they are enabled by jumpers installed at the drive's
option connector.

Option Connector LED Hook-Up
----------------------------
Some DSP5350W drive versions do not contain a Remote LED connector.
If your drive does not contain the Remote LED connector, the remote
or bezel-mounted LED may be attached at the drive's Option connector
J3.

NOTE
External current limiting resistors must be provided to limit the
current to 6 mA or less in the external LED circuit when using the
Option connector. No current limiting resistor is required when the
LED is rated to handle up to 7 mA maximum. The remote LED supplied as
part of a Digital Equipment Corporation bezel not require the current
limiting resistor.

Remote Busy - To remotely monitor Busy status of the drive, remove
the On-Board Busy LED Enable jumper from the Option connector, if
present. Connect the cathode side of the remote Busy LED to the
BSY_SINK L pin. The anode side of the LED connects to the +5 VDC pin.

Remote Fault - To remotely monitor Fault status of the drive, remove
the On-Board Fault LED Enable jumper from the Option connector, if
present. Connect the cathode side of the remote Fault LED to the
FLT_SINK L pin. The anode side of the LED connects to the +5 VDC
 pin.

AC Failure Warning
------------------
The drive can be warned that an AC failure is imminent in one of two
ways:

- Assert the AC_LOW L signal to a logic low
- Assert the RESET signal on the SCSI bus

The system must provide the warning at least 1 ms before it can no
longer deliver safe voltages to the drive. When a warning is re-
ceived, the drive prevents write-splices for outstanding writes and
prohibits further write operations.

Mounting the Drive
------------------
Mount the disk drive in any position.

CAUTION
Observe the screw length instruction printed on the chassis. There
should be no more than 0.020 inch thread protrusion inside chassis.
Excessive screw length will result in inadequate HDA clearance and
possible drive malfunction.

Allow at least 0.10 inch of clearance from adjacent surfaces and
sufficient slack in all cables to provide adequate room for any drive
movement on its shock mounts. Route cables carefully to prevent
chaffing the cable insulation.

Follow these directions to mount the drive in the bay.

 1. Position the drive in the bay, and select the drive chassis
mounting locations (bottom or side mounting) that match your
    enclosure.

 2. Secure the unit using four #6-32 screws at the selected mounting
locations. Screw length must not result in more than 0.020 inch
thread protrusion inside chassis. Excessive screw length will
result in inadequate HDA clearance, and may lead to drive mal-
    functions.

Bezel Installation
------------------
We recommended using only bezels supplied by Digital Equipment
Corporation. Otherwise, the drive's isolation characteristics could
be compromised. Contact your authorized representative for ordering
information.

LED Indicators
--------------
The green Busy LED illuminates to signify the drive is working on a
SCSI command. The amber Fault LED indicates a fault status.

Both the Busy and Fault indicators light briefly during power up.
This serves as a hardware and lamp test.

During a calibration operation, the Busy LED is illuminated and the
Fault LED flashes. Calibrations occur following some firmware up-
grades. Generally, calibration periods last only about five minutes,
after which the drive comes on-line and both indicators go out.

If the Fault indicator lights at any other time, the drive has failed
and likely requires service (unless the Fault LED was turned on by
means of a MODE SELECT command).

Remote Busy and Fault indicators can be connected to the drive to
provide status display at a remote location or panel.

Power-On Tests
--------------
After power is applied, and before spin-up is completed, the drive
performs self-test diagnostics prior to making itself visible on the
SCSI bus. These intitial self-test check most of the electronics that
control HDA, but not the SCSI transceiver or SCSI connector.

After spin-up, additional tests complete self-test coverage of the
electronics module and the HDA. The unit appears not ready to the
host between completion of the initial self-tests and completion of
the drive's post spin-up tests.
