Jumper Setting

SCSI Address and Options Selections
The DSP3085 and DSP3105 disk drives have option connectors for sett-
ing the SCSI address and various operating options. The connector is
normally used in conjunction with jumpers which are supplied. The
jumpers are placed in the connector to select the desired SCSI
address and operating options.

SCSI Bus Address Selection
Three pairs of pins on the option connector set the disk drive's
address on the SCSI bus. The drive accepts addresses 0 through 7. You
must assign a unique address to each device on a SCSI bus.
Typically, the first drive on the bus is assigned address 0, the
second drive address 1, and so on. SCSI address 7 is usually reserved
for the host adapter.

Terminator Power Jumper
The disk drive provides termination power to its own terminator
resistor packs (if installed) and/or to the SCSI bus. Alternatively,
the drive's terminator resistor packs can be powered from the SCSI

In all cases, the drive's terminator resistor packs are to be
installed ONLY if the drive is at the end of the SCSI bus.

Generally, the host is the only device on the SCSI bus required to
provide TERMPWR for the bus. To ensure that there is a sufficient
level of power along the entire SCSI bus, Digital Equipment
Corporation recommends that all devices on the SCSI bus supply
TERMPWR (if they are capable). SCSI devices are protected by a diode
or similar semiconductor to prevent back flow of the terminator
power when more than one device supplies this power.

SCSI Bus Termination
Both ends of the SCSI bus cable must be terminated. One end is
terminated at the host. The other end must be terminated by the last
SCSI device on the SCSI bus.

Do not install Models DSP3105D (differential) or DSP3210WD (wide,
differential) at the end of the bus. DSP3105D and DSP3210WD
drives can not provide bus termination.

Configure Optional Features
The 5-volt signals of two or more drives should not be connected
together or to any other current source by using the Option
connector. Doing so may cause drive malfunction or component damage.

Care must be taken when connecting the ground signals of two or
more drives together to avoid ground loop problems. Ground loops
may cause drive malfunction.

The following optional features can be configured according to your
system requirements. These features include:

- Notification of AC power failure

- Spindle synchronization

- Write protection

- Spin delay

Option Connector Spindle Synchronization
Use Pin 19 of the option connector to connect the drive for optional
synchronized spindle operation. The drive operates either as a
Master, generating a reference signal on Pin 19, or as a Slave, re-
ceiving a reference signal on Pin 19 from another drive or other
source. Master or Slave operation modes are set through the SCSI

The drive always maintains local speed regulation when no reference
signal is applied.

Spindle Synchronization
DSP3000 Series drives support synchronized spindle operation. Master
or slave synchronized operation is set through a SCSI Mode Select

When the drive operates as a Master, it generates a spindle
synchronization reference signal (SPINDLE_SYNC_REF L). When operating
as a slave, the drive synchronizes its spindle according to the
SPINDLE_SYNC_REF L input reference. The drive always maintains local
speed regulation when no reference signal is applied.

The reference signal must originate from drives with the same
electronics modules. Fo example, connect Model DSP3160 only with
another DSP3160 drive. Do not connect the SPINDLE SYNC signal
so that of any other model disk drive. Otherwise, the drive may mal-

Spindle Sync Connection
The following figure shows the SPINDLE SYNC and associated ground
connection pin on the Option connector.

For Models DSP3085/3105/3105D, pin 10 is provided as an alternate
SPINDLE SYNC connection to facilitate installations where a 10-pin
header is used to connect several remote features. Pin 19 is provided
to facilitate the use of a 2-pin connector for SPINDLE SYNC
connections. The ground return is pin 20, although pins 2, 4, or 6
can be used for the ground return.

Option Connector SPINUP Jumper
The disk drive spins up when you install a jumper across pins 13 and
14 of the option connector and apply power. Without the jumper, the
drive waits for a START STOP UNIT command before spinning up.

The disk drive spins down when power is removed, when a fault
condition is detected, or in response to the START STOP UNIT command.

DSP3000 Series drives support either the Write Protect or Spin
Delay mode.

If your drive supports the Spin Delay mode, you can program the
drive automatically spin-up at powere on by installing the jumper
across the referenced Option connector pins.

To have spin-up controlled by a Start/Stop Unit command, remove the

Write Protection
DSP3000 Series support either the Write Protect or Spin Delay
mode. If your drive supports the Write Protect mode, install the
jumper across the referenced pins of the Option connector.

To disable Write Protection from 8-bit drives, remove the jumper
from across 13 and 14 of the Option connector.

Note that when the Write Protect Mode bit is set to a 1, automatic
spin up occurs at power on.

Remote Options
You can also use the option connector to connect the drive for
various remote capabilities when the necessary user-provided
facilities are available.

 - SCSI address selection from external switches; for example, from an
   operator control panel.

 - Busy and Fault conditions monitoring, using external LED indicators
   instead of those on the drive.

- Remote power supply notification to the drive of ac power failure.

Remote SCSI ID Selection
The Option connector enables you to set the drive's SCSI ID from an
external (remote) switch or control panel.

Configure the drive for remote ID selection by removing the
SCSI ID jumpers (if present) from the SCSI ID pins. Then connect the
leads from the external selection switch to the referenced pins.
Observe the following guidelines while doing so.

- ID bit 0, at Pin 1, is the Least Significant Bit.

 - SCSI ID bits 0, 1, 2, and 3 are active LOW signals. That is, the
   bit is a 1 if the corresponding remote switch is closed to ground.

 - For Models DSP3085/3105/3105D/3160/3210, use pins 2, 4, and 6 as
   the associated ground returns for ID bits 0, 1, and 2 respectively.
   They can be used individually, or the ground returns of all three
   ID bits can be combined at pin 2, 4, or 6.

LED Indicators
The disk drive has two surface-mounted LED indicators: Busy (BSY)
which is green and Fault (FLT) which is amber.

The BSY LED indicates that the drive is working on a SCSI command. It
is not equivalent to the SCSI BSY signal. The FLT LED idicates a
drive fault condition.

It is normal for both LEDs to light briefly upon application of

Remote Busy and Fault Status Display

The drive's Busy and Fault status can be monitored by connecting
a remote Busy and a remote Fault display LED to the drive's Option

 Remote Busy
 The remotely monitor Busy status of the drive, connect the cathode
 side of the remote Busy LED to the BSY_OUT L pin. The anode side of
 the LED connects to the +5VDC OUT pin.

 Remote Fault
 The remotely monitor Fault status of the drive, connect the cathode
 side of the remote Fault LED to the FLT_OUT pin. The anode side of
 the LED connects to the +5VDC OUT pin.

AC Failure Notification
The host system (or power supply) can warn the drive of an impend-
ing AC failure by asserting the signal AC_LOW L. This is an active
low signal (low means power failure).

The system should provide this warning at least 10 milliseconds prior
to failure for this feature to be operational.

To utilize this feature, connect the system's AC power warning
signal to the referenced AC_LOW L pin on the Option connector.
When the host system asserts the AC_LOW L warning to the drive, the
drive prevents write-spliced for outstanding writes.

You can mount the disk drive in any position. The drive (with bezel)
attaches to the system bay and accept #6-32 screws. Screws should
not exceed 0.25 inch (6.25 millimeters) in length, otherwise
damage to the PCB may result.

CAUTION: The mounting screws should not protude more than four
threads beyond the inside surface of the drive frame. Screws longer
than specified can disable the shock mounting process and damage the

LED Indicators
The green Busy LED illuminates to signify the drive is working on a
SCSI command. The amber Fault LED indicates a fault status.

Both the Busy and Fault indicators light briefly during power up.
This serves as a hardware and lamp test.

During a calibration operation, the Busy LED is illuminated and the
Fault LED flashes. Calibrations occur following some firmware up-
grades. Generally, calibration periods last only about five minutes,
after which the drive comes online and both indicators go out.

If the Fault indicator lights at any other time, the drive has failed
and likely requires service (unless the Fault LED was turned on by
means of a MODE SELECT command).

Remote Busy and Fault indicators can be connected to the Option
connector to provide status display at a remote location or panel.

Power-On Tests
After power is applied, and before spinup is completed, the drive
performs selftest diagnostics prior to making itself visible on the
SCSI bus. These intitial selftest check most of the electronics that
control HDA, but not the SCSI transceiver or SCSI connector.

After spinup, additional tests complete selftest coverage of the
electronics module and the HDA. The unit appears not ready to the
host between completion of the initial selftests and completion of
the drive's post spinup tests.
