7.7: I thought Emacs was just a text editor. I've seen it mentioned in afew posts. What is it used for?

Emacs is the GOD of all editors :-). It has its own programming language that lets the user run programs on it. Emacs has gopher, IRC and WWW programs that can be used with AmiTCP. Emacs includes Gnus for news reading.
