Contraceptive Sponge
(Protectaid, United States and Canada)

More drugs used for Contraception.

Use:

The Contraceptive Sponge or Protectaid is used to prevent pregnancy. When used with another barrier method, for example condom, it is 98% effective. When used alone its effectiveness ranges from 80% to 90%.

How It Works:

The Contraceptive Sponge or Protectaid is a barrier, preventing sperm from reaching the cervix and uterus to fertilize an ovum or egg. The Contraceptive Sponge or Protectaid also is impregnated with a spermicide - F-5 gel - which kills sperm.

Side Effects:

The Contraceptive Sponge or Protectaid is easy to use, is not messy, generally well tolerated. However, a sensitivity to either the sponge itself or the spermicide may produce irritation.

Cautions for People:

Some people find the Contraceptive Sponge or Protectaid ideal for them - people who need only an occasional contraceptive; women who smoke and need an alternative to an oral contraceptive; women who are nursing and need a alternative to a systemic product.

Drug Interactions:

The Contraceptive Sponge or Protectaid does not interact with other drugs.
