Topotecan or Hycamtin is used for ovarian cancer.
Topotecan or Hycamtin is a member of a group of drugs known as camptothecins or topoisomerase I inhibitors. By inhibiting this enzyme, DNA damage occurs in the cells when they replicate.
Topotecan or Hycamtin is considered second line therapy after cisplatin or paclitaxel for advances ovarian cancer because of severe neutropenia. While it does seem to work better than paclitaxel, the severity of this blood disorder side effects limits its use.
Because of the potential severe blood disorder, people taking Topotecan or Hycamtin must be followed closely.
Topotecan or Hycamtin is used in combination with other drugs for ovarian cancer treatment, however it must be used with caution in combination with any other drugs that may cause blood disorders.
