Zileutron or Leutrol is used in the treatment of asthma.
Zileutron or Leutrol inhibits lipoxygenase and by blocking this enzyme the production of leukotrienes is reduced. Leukotrienes are the proteins in the body that trigger airway inflammation and broncho constriction.
Zileutron or Leutrol can cause changes in liver functioning. For this reason, periodic liver function tests are recommended.
People with liver disease or who drink large amounts of alcohol are at increased risk of complications.
Because Zileutron or Leutrol is metabolised in the liver, other drugs that also have a hepatic effect will interact with Zileutron or Leutrol - theophylline, terfenadine, warfarin.
