This is a unique class of antidepressant mediation, which at this time, only contains one drug, bupropion. It's unique because it doesn't affect serotonin, one of the neurotransmitters in the brain. And although we're not sure exactly how bupropion works to treat depression, it involves dopamine and norepinephrine, two other neurotransmitters.
Side Effects
People taking bupropion usually tolerate it quite well. The side effects experienced by some include:
Unlike some of the other antidepressants, bupropion usually doesn't make you sleepy. In fact you are more likely to be restless and have trouble sleeping. It also doesn't cause sexual problems as some other antidepressants can.
Although an increased risk of having a seizure sounds like a scary thing, it's a small risk and depends on how much of the medication you take and your medical history. Make sure you inform your health-care provider about any side effects you experience. He or she can change your dose or switch you to another medication.
Special Considerations
Because your risk of having a seizure increases with the more bupropion you take, it's important to take it carefully, according to your health-care provider's instructions.
You don't need to follow a special diet while taking bupropion, and it doesn't cause weight gain. Check with your health-care provider before drinking any alcohol while taking bupropion. It may be safe in very small amounts.
It's also a good idea to check with your health-care practitioner before taking any other medications. You will not need to have blood tests to check the medication level.
