I'm in the market for a finishing sander. I have a belt sander which
is good for removing wood. But I want a sander that will give me
a nice finish.
Recently, there has been a lot of talk about orbital sanders. I
like the feature of the dust collecting hood that is available for
these sanders. Are these dust collecting hoods available for palm sanders?
There also is a difference in price. The orbital sander are between
$150.00 and $200.00. While the palm sander are between $30.00 and $100.00.
Is the orbital sander that much better of a tool?
Think of them as entirely different tools. I have both, and they each
are good for different things. My palm sander is better for gently
removing material with fine grits. The orbital has the ability to remove
material quickly and is really good at large flat areas. The palm sander
is less likely to round square edges (accidentally) of narrow stock.
The motor is much stronger on a random orbit sander. A palm sander has
a little motor.
If you just want a finishing sander then a palm sander is probably fine.
If you want something more versatile then a random orbit sander is
better.
