I have both. I have found that the orbital sander lends itself well
to finish sanding. The belt sander will take off an amazing amount
of material in a very short time. However with the right grit paper the
orbital will remove quite a bit of material. I have the new Bosch
with the velcro paper. Great system except the paper can be a bitch to
get so buy it while you can. The orbital is much easier to control. I
was able to 'master' the operation quite easily. Whereas I ruined a lot
of stock when I first got my belt sander. If it was either/or I would
buy the orbital first. I just don't need that much brut force that
often. The orbital has a much larger range of applications.
