I'll share some experience I recently had with regards o a Sears table saw.
I purchased a Sears 3hp ( peak true 1 1/2 ) saw. This was not their
contractor's saw but a cheaper model on sale for about $399. I picked
the saw up at a local sears ( all 200+ pounds ) and lugged it down to the
basement. After a few evenings of assembly it was ready to go. The first
thing I noticed ( as everyone already knows ) was the crappy fence system.
By the way, I'm not crazy about the contractor model's "improved " fence.
My cast extension tables were solid, but one was far from level. To make a
long story short I decided to return the unit about a month or two later.
Sears took it back, no porblems. To their credit, not many places would do
that. I haven't purchased a replacement yet, but been considering a Delta
or the new Ryobi BT3000.
Looking back on the whole experience, I made not have made the right choice.
I feel the basic Sears box ( motor, drive etc. ) is of good quality and a
bargain. Take this saw, add on a good fence systems with extensions and
you would probably end up with a great saw at the price of a basic no frill
Delta contractor.
