I recently had occasion to check out both the Ryobi RE600 and the Makita 3+
hp plunge routers at a tool show. The Ryobi had every feature I wanted,
and at a great price, (~200). I then set it down on a sturdy table and
grabbing both handles, was able to "rock" it on the plunge pillars. I
detected rock both towards and away from me, and side to side. I was
able to detect no such play in the Makita pillars. Too bad as the Makita
was missing a couple features I want. These are a large depth adjusdtment
knob for use under a table, and more importantly, variable speed. What
I'd really like to do is see both routers mounted in tables side by side,
then take measurements with a dial gauge. Why is it all the magazines that
do "tool comparisons" never do that kind of thing?

I've heard rumors both Makita and Hitachi are coming out with 3+ hp
variable speed plunge units soon. I'm holding onto my money for awhile.
