I'm looking for suggestions for a resawing bandsaw. Although I plan to
resaw some large pieces (3X14-15) from logs, my main purpose is to cut 1/10"
and 1/8" thick pieces for musical instruments (e.g., dulcimers) from mostly
hardwoods. I want a saw that will cut straight and leave minimal smoothing
work to be done. (I do not want to use a table saw for these operations.)
I have a Craftsman bandsaw that works bearably well for normal cuts but is
wretched for resawing even with the wide blade. I had pretty well convinced
myself to buy a Ryobi (with the 3" blade), but when I went to my local
hardware store to buy it, I was told they'd just sold their last one and that
Ryobi had quit importing them into the US. I have not yet been able to locate
another outfit with the Ryobi. I've been told Hitachi makes a resawing bandsaw
with a 3" blade but have not been able to find one or talk to anyone who's used
one. The salesperson suggested I buy a Delta with the riser kit, but I'm not
confident it will cut straight enough, even with the special "WoodSlicer" blade,
(although it would make a nice replacement for the Craftsman). The salesman's
demo was unimpressive, but that may not have been the Delta's fault.
I tried to access the FAQ files for this newsgroup listed in one of the
news.announce.newusers files, but the daemon did not seem to be able to send
them, although it was able to send one of the other files. If this question
has been covered before and is in a FAQ, please email me on how to access it.
I would appreciate receiving your opinions, experience, and advice concerning
resawing with any of the above mentioned saws or others you're familiar with.
If it is preferable, you may email your reply and I will post a summary later
of any appropriate replies.
