I have a question for our audience.
I am interested in installing a good dust collection system in
the basement of my house so that I can do some work without
creating migrating clouds of predatory dust that settle and eat
anything and everything in the basement.
Until I do so, I find that I have to keep the nasty tools in the
garage and open the door when I work.
I currently use a placebo device know as a Sears shop vac known for
its bright red color and lack of suction. I have looked (in catalogs)
at several dust collection systems such as the Grizzly or Jet
which range from 1 to 3 hp and from 610 cubic ft./minute to
1883 cubic ft./minute. They all seem to use 4 inch openings
with hurricane force winds.
How much suction is enough? What size tubing makes sense to run through
the basement? 4 inch tubing seems huge. My sewer line from the bathroom
is only 3 inches. What systems have people used and were they
adequate, too much, etc?
