80 What is the "best" CM tool to use?

This is a loaded question without an answer. The real answer to
this question is ... it depends!! "Best" is relative to the
environment, culture, and goals of the organization you are working
in. One site's best may be ClearCase or TRUEchange, another PVCS or
CM Synergy, all for very good reasons. Some sites select multiple
tools to meet different project needs. Each was a "best" for that
situation. Your source code's future depends on how well you manage
its past. Development teams need to track a project's entire
history and rebuild past versions quickly and accurately-with 100%
assurance of reliability and integrity-every time. Your tool
selection deserves a lot of thought. It would be best to check the
product literature and the other parts of this FAQ for possible
solutions, then do your own evaluation.
