This article is from the misc.writing Recommended Reading List FAQ, by Terry L Jeffress jeffress@xmission.com with numerous contributions by others.
Field, Syd. "Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting" 3rd ed.
Dell, 1987. ISBN 0-44-057647-4, trade paperback, $13.95.
Fairly heavy going in places, but overall very good.
Egri, Lajos. "The Art of Dramatic Writing." Simon and Schuster,
1946, 1960, 1977. ISBN 0-67121-332-6, trade paperback, $12.00.
Although oriented towards playwriting, most of the advice
applies to any dramatic fiction writing.
