40 New Transmission Designations

On the new transmissions (e.g. 41TE), the numbers and letters actually
mean something:

4 amount of forward gears
1 the torque rating for the trans (on a 1-8 scale 1 lowest 8 strongest)
t or r transaxle or rear wheel drive
e or h electronic or hydraulic

The 1999 Grand Cherokee will have an optional 5-speed automatic.
