*A REFSIG: This location provides a port for external
connection of the synchronized spindle reference signal (Pin
         1) and ground (Pin 2). The reference signal is bi-directional
single-ended, and terminated without an external resistor. It
is also available on J4 Pin 28 if the factory jumper is
installed. The drive will self-determine if it is a master or
         slave for spindle synchronization.

B HOST DRIVE 1/ACT: When this shunt is installed, DRIVE 1
PRESENT (provided by the output of 74HCT14) is applied to J4
pin 39 for system that require this signal from drive 0. This
shunt is mutually exclusive with the ACTIVE shunt. (i.e., if
jumper "B" is installed Jumper "E" must not be installed).

*C DRIVE 0: When this shunt is installed, the drive is
configured as drive 0. When not installed, the drive is drive
         1.

D DRIVE 1 PRESENT: When installed, this shunt indicates to
drive 0 that drive 1 is present. This shunt must be installed
         on drive 0 in a two-drive system.

E ACTIVE: When this shunt is installed, DASP- is made present
on J4 pin 39. This shunt is mutually exclusive with the HOST

Synchronozed Spindle Operation
------------------------------
The option allows two drives operationg from the same host to operate
their spindles at the same synchronized rotational rate. A system of
synchronized spindle drives is self-arbitrating in establishing the
master-slave relationship. Drives operating in a system in
synchronized mode increase the system capacity and transfer rate in
a cost effective manner.

A synchronized spindle array application may contain u to 9 drives
(max.) on one twisted pair Reference Index cable connection.

Notes on installation
=====================

Drive Orientation
-----------------
The balanced rotary arm actuator design of the drive allows it to
be mounted in any orientation. All drive performance characterization
however, has been done with the drive in horizontal (disc level) and
vertical (drive on its side) orientations, and these are the two
preferred mounting orientations.

The drive is designed, manufactured, and tested with a "Plug-in and
Play" installation philosophy. Basically, this philosophy minimizes
the requirements for highly trained personnel to integrate the drive
into an OEM's system, whetherin a factory or field environment.

 - If one drive is on the AT (IDE) bus, insure that the AT (IDE) bus
ID of the drive is set for drive 0.

 - If two devices are on the bus insure that the drive 0/ drive 1 ID
Jumper of each drive is correct for its position on the bus
   (select a drive 0 and a drive 1).

 - If the drive is the only device on the bus it should be attached to
end of the AT (IDE) bus cable (18 inch max length).

 - Set all appropriate option jumpers for desired operation prior to
power on. If jumpers are changed after power has been applied the
drive must be power cycled for the new settings to be affect.

 - In all cases where additional drives are added on the AT (IDE) bus
it will be necessary to logically install the new drive onto the
   system.

Mounting Holes
--------------
Four 6-32 UNC-2A screws are required for installation. Maximum
mounting screw length into chassis is 0.125 inches (3.17 mm).

Cooling
-------
The cabinet cooling must be designed by the customer so that the
ambient temperature immediately surrounding the drive will not exceed
temperature conditions. Specific consideration should be given to
make sure adequate air circulation is present around the components
on the PWA.

Service Tools
-------------
No special tools are required for site installation or recommended
for site maintenance. The depot repair philosophy of the drive
precludes the necessity for special tools. Should repair of any part
of the drive be desired, drive should be sent through purchase source
to the factory repair depot. There are no spare parts for the drive
avaiable. Call 1-800-468-3472 if purchase source cannot arrange for
return of the drive.

Air Cleanliness
---------------
The driv is designed to operate in a typical office environment with
minimal environment control.

Interface Cabling Options
-------------------------
The drive is capable of operating on the AT (IDE) bus in a daisy
chained configuration with a second drive/controller that operates
in accordance with these specification. One drive is designated as
master (drive 0) and the other as the slave (drive 1).

DC Cable and Connector
----------------------
The drive receives DC power through a 4 pin connector mounted on the
main circuit board. Recommended part numbers for the mating connector
are included below, but equivalent parts may be used.

Type of cable: 18 AWG
Connector: AMP 1-480424-0
Contacts: AMP 60619-4 (Loose Piece); AMP 61117-4 (Strip)

I/O Cable and Connector
-----------------------
The I/O connector is a 40 pin connector. A key is provided by the re-
moval of Pin 20. The corresponding pin on the cable connector should
be plugged. Seagate recommends keying this connector to prevent the
possibility of installing it upside down.

Maximum I/O cable length is 18 inches (.45 metres).

Recommended part numbers for the mating connector are included below,
but equivalent parts may be used.

 Connector: 40 pin, 3M-3417-7000 (Strain relief 3448-2040)
Cable: Flat Cable (Stranded AWG 28) 3M-3365-40
Flat Cable (Stranded AWG 28) 3M-3517-40 (Shielded
                     Cable)

Grounding
---------
Signal ground (PWA) and HDA ground are connected together in the
drive and cannot be separated by the user. The chassis ground is not
connected to the HDA and PWA ground. A chassis grounding quick
disconnect Tab is provided at the rear of the drive above the DC
power connector. Mating connector to connect a system chassis ground
to the grounding tab is AMPP/N 62137-2. If it is desired for the
system chassis ground to be connected to the HDA/PWA ground, the
systems integrator or user must provide a flexible ground strap be-
tween HDA and chassis ground point. Such a strap must not interfere
with the ability of the HDA to meet shock and vibration
specifications.

Features

SEAGATE ST1480A FAMILY PRODUCT MANUAL 77738463-B

General Description
-------------------
The ST1480A Family drives are members of a family of low cost, high
performance, highly reliable, random access storage devices designed
to meet the needs of the OEM, AT (IDE) compatible, marketplace.

Standards
---------
The ST1480A Family has been developed as system peripherals to the
highest standards of design and construction. The ST1480A Family
drives depends upon their host equipment to provide adequate power
and environment in order to achieve optimum performance and
compliance with applicable industry and governmental regualations.
Special attention must be given in the areas of safety, power
distribution, shielding, audible noise control, and temperature
regulation.

The ST1480A Family complies with Seagate standards.

Each Member of the ST1480A Family UL Recognized component per UL 478
or UL1950 and a CSA Certified component per CSA C22.2 No. 220-M1986
or CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 950-M89.It also meets the requirements of DIN
VDE 0805/05.90, and EN 60950:1988 (IEC 950).

The drive as delivered, is designed for system integration before
use. It is supplied as a component or subassembly as defined in the
FCC Rules and Regulations, Part 15, Subpart J governing EMI of
computing devices and the Radio Interference Regulations of the
Canadian Department of Communications. The drive is, therefore, not
directly subject to the FCC rules and regulations or the Radio Inter-
ference Regulations of the Canadian Department of Communications.

The head, disc and actuator chamber (HDA) is environmentally sealed
at the factory. Air is recirculated within the HDA and passes through
a nonreplaceable filter to ensure the maintenance of a contamination
free disc/actuator environment.

The ST1480A Family uses a dedicated landing zone at the innermost
radius of the media thus eliminating the possibility of destroying or
degrading data by landing in the data zone. Head parking is done
automatically by the drive. The Host need not send a command that
sends the heads to the parking zone.

The ST1480A Family drives incorporate an automatic shipping look
which prevents potential damage to the heads and discs caused by
movements during shipping and handling. The shipping lock is
automatically disengaged when power is applied to the drive.

The ST1480A Family drives decode Track 0 location from the dedicated
servo surface thereby eliminating mechanical transducer adjustments
and related reliability concerns.

The ST1480A Family drives use a high performance actuator assembly
consisting of a low inertia, balanced, patented, straight arm design
which provides excellent performance with minimum power dissipation.

Media Description
-----------------
The media used on the drive has a diameter of approximately 3.5
inches (89 mm). The aluminum substrate is coated with a thin film
magnetic material, overcoated with a proprietary protective layer for
improved durability and environmental protection.

Each data surface has a total of 1474 tracks and is capable of
storing 54 Mbytes of unformatted data.

Media defects are characterized as correctable or uncorrectable de-
pending on the type and magnitude of the media flaw. The drive media
certification is performed using the following standards:

An error burst of 11 bits or less is a correctable error.

An error burst greater than 11 bits in length is an un-
            correctable error.

In each ot the above cases reallocation is performed during factory
media certification testing. In other words, all known correctable or
uncorrectable defects are reallocated at the factory.

At the time of shipment from the point of manufacture, the drive
recording surfaces will meet the following requirements.

       1. 1475 total physical tracks per surface.

       2. Tracks 0 to be error free on each data surface.

       3. 50 defects per surface maximum.

       4. Accumulative defects not to exceed one per megabyte, based
on total available unformatted drive capacity.

Defect and Error Management
---------------------------
The drive, as delivered, complies with this specification. The read
error rate and specified storage capacity are not dependent upon use
of defect management routines by the host.

Defect and error management in the AT system involves the drive
internal defect/error management and AT system error considerations
(error in communications between host and the drive). Tools for use
in designing a defect/error management plan are briefly outlined in
this section, with references to other sections where further details
are given.

Drive Internal Defect/Errors
----------------------------
Identified defects are recorded on the drive defects list tracks
(referred to as the primary or ETF defect list). These known defects
are assigned new locations during the initial drive format operation
at the factory. The drive internal retries and data correction by ECC
should be enabled to recover data from additional flaws if they
occur. If data correction by ECC is required to recover data, the
host should immediately re-assign or mark the sector "bad block" by
use of the Format Track command. If the drive automatic retries and
data correction by ECC are disabled, defects are usally unrecoverable
and need to be re-assigned or marked "bad block" as they are
discovered.

Logical Capacity
-----------------
The drive has an embedded controller that has the capability to
translate the drive's actual, physical heads, cylinders and sectors
values to logical, apparent values when communicating with a host
controller. Thus a host system not having a disc drive table entry
that fits the drive physical configuration can install the drive
as a drive having a heads, cylinders and sectors configuration
matching some drive that is listed in the Host's BIOS drive table.
The host sends the Initialize Drive Parameters command to the
embedded controller in the drive and it translates the drive's
physical heads and sectors to whatever they need to appear to be to
install on the host system as they selected type. The capacity
achieved in the translate mode depends on the logical configuration
to which the drive "translates". The Logical configuration must
equate to less than or equal to the drives maximum specified
capacity.

Recommended Logical values of parameters are as follows:

    ST1480A 895 cylinders 15 heads 62 sector/track
    ST1400A 1018 cylinders 12 heads 53 sector/track
    ST1401A 726 cylinders 15 heads 61 sector/track

Formatting
----------
It is not necessary to low level format this drive. The drive is
shipped from the factory low level formatted in 512 byte physical
sectors. The drive translates its physical format structure to
simulate a Logical format as required by host.

Seek time is defined as the required time from the receipt of a Seek
Command by the drive until the completion of the seek operation.
Average seek time is determined by dividing the sum of the time for
all possible seek movements by the total number of seek movements.
Drive level seek times do not include controller overhead, the time
required by the drive controller to process the command.

Spindle Speed and Latency
-------------------------
The spindle speed is 4412 0.5% r/min. The speed tolerance includes
motor performance and motor control circuit tolerances.

The average latency time is 6.80 milliseconds, based on a nominal
disc speed of 4412 r/min.

Host/Drive Interface data transfer rate
---------------------------------------
Maximum instantaneous: 8.0 Mbytes/s
Maximum average: 5.5 Mbytes/s

Power Sequencing
----------------
Power sequencing is not required for the drive. The drive protects
against inadvertent writing during power up and down.

Temperature
-----------
The drive will meet all specifications over a 41*F to 122*F (5*C to
50*C) ambient temperature range with a maximum gradient of 36*F
(20*C) per hour. The enclosure for the drive should be designed such
that the temperatures at the locations are not exceeded. Air flow may
be needed to achieve these temperature values. Operation at case
temperatures above these values may adversely affect the drives
ability to meet specification.

Heat/Power Dissipation
----------------------
Typical power dissipation is 12 watts (41 BTUs per hour) of DC power
average at nominal voltages. Typical power dissipation under idle
operating conditions is 9.5 watts (32.4 BTU's per hour).

Reliability
-----------
The following reliability specifications assume correct host/drive
operational interface has been implemented, including all interface
timings, power supply voltages, environmental conditions, and
appropriate data handling circuit to the host system.

MTBF 150,000 hours
Service Life 5 years
Preventive Maintenance None required
