of thin nosed pliers.
NB: The entrances to individual sockets on the PCB may appear to be
sealed. The application of gentle pressure will break this seal.

A drive may be mounted in any horizontal orientation (it must not be
mounted on i.e. front panel upwards or downwards).

Eigth mounting holes, four on the bottom and two on each side are
provided for mounting the drive in an enclosure. The size and
location of these holes are identical to those used on industry
standard microfloppy drives.

Caution
Do not use screws that project more than 3mm (1/8 inch) into the
drive.

Take care that no cables or other obstructions touch the drive when
it is running.

Operating Environment
---------------------
The drive is designed to operate in a standard office environment.
High relative humidity conditions should be avoided to prevent the
possibility of condensation. Also avoid low relative humidity
conditions to prevent particle accumulation by static attraction. The
drive is not intended for use in a harsh environment with high dust
and dirt concentrations.

To ensure reliable operation, it is recommended that an airflow of
at least 3 CFM is provided across the disc drive and PCB assembly in
the final installation configuration.

J1 Connector
------------
This is a 34-pin PCB edge connector for a flat cable carrying the
daisy-chain signal lines. This cable may be connected directly to the
controller or connected in a daisy chain configuration with other
drives. All signals are gated by the DRIVE SELECT signal.

J2 Connector
------------
This is a 20 pin PCB edge connector for a flat cable carrying the
radial signal lines. This cable may not be daisy chained; it mus be a
direct radial connection to the controller.

 NOTE: For J1 and J2 the even numbered pins are located on the
 component side of the PCB. On J1 all the odd numbered pins are
 grounded. The  recommended mating connector for J1 and J2 are shown
 below:

       The connectors are insulation-displacement types so for the
       daisy chain cable the connector can be fitted at any position
       to suit the user's system layout.

CAUTION
Be sure to mount each connector so that pin 1 is crimped on to wire
1 etc.

Each connector must have a polarising key inserted between pins 4 and
6 to prevent incorrect system cabling.

Keep the total length of the daisy chain cable as short as possible
to reduce system congestion and R.F. interference. The overall length
should not exceed 6m (20 feet).

Keep the radial cable length as short as possible - absolute maximum
is 6m (20 feet).

The radial cable cannot be daisy-chained.

Use any standard 34 way and 20 way flatstrip cable such as Scotchflex
3302 series (or equivalent) for the daisy chain and radial cables.

J3 Connector
------------
The DC power connector is a 4 pin AMP Mate-N-Loc connector which is
connected to the PCB via four short trailing leads. The recommended
connector for J3 is AMP P/N 1-480424-0 utilising AMP sockets P/N
350078-4 (strip) or P/N 61173 (loose piece).

J4 Frame Ground
---------------
A frame ground connection to the drive is provided by an AMP Faston
connector. The recommended mating connector is AMP 62187-1. Frame
ground should be connected to the host system ground through a 7 x
0.32 mm or larger conductor.

Termination
-----------
Termination of the daisy chain signal lines is only required at the
end of the daisy chain. A 180/470 Ohm resistor pack is used for this
function. The terminator is accessible on the underside of the drive.

Note the position of the terminator pin ident notch when fitting a
terminator pack.

CAUTION
Only the last physical drive in a daisy chained system needs
termination. Any resistor packs fitted to intermediate drives must
be removed.

Introduction
------------
The Newbury Data NDR 300 range of disc drives ('PENNY') is a range of
high performance '3.5 inch' Winchester drives with up to four 95mm
plated discs providing unformatted storage capacities to 51 Mbytes.
System integration is simplified through the use of the Industry
Standard ST506/412 type interface combined with PENNY's inherent low
power consumption.

Media Quality
-------------
Following factory testing each drive will be supplied with a Defect
Map, listing the location of all media flaws. The defective area will
be identified by cylinder number, head number and bytes from Index.
From this information, it is possible to calculate which sector the
defect will lie in any given format.

It is recommended that sectors which contain declared defects should
not be used to record data, and the user should 'flag'all such
defects. In the unlikely event that a user's system detects flows at
differed locations than the factory declared defects then these
sectors should also be flagged.

Note: At the time of manufacture the drive is guranteed to be defect
free on cylinder zero.

At the time of manufacture the maximum number of defects per surface
will be 10.

Spindle Drive Motor
-------------------
Rotation of the discs is via a direct drive, 3 phase brushless DC
motor contained with low heat dissipation. The motor runs the discs
up to the operating speed and dedicated circuits on the PCB maintain
precise speed control.

Data Storage Discs
------------------
These 95mm discs are composed of an aluminium substrate coated with a
very thin (3-4 microinch) metallic film and then sputtered with a
carbon overcoat. Such a composition provide excellent magnetic
properties and good resistance to abrasion during head take-off and
landing. Data storage is organised as 615 concentric tracks per disc
surface.

Heads
-----
The read/write heads are used to write data to and read data from the
disc surfaces. They are small, light, 'Whitney'type heads designed to
fly at the low flying height (a few microinches) demanded by the high
data storage capacity.

Head Positioning Assembly
-------------------------
The read/write heads are attached to a linear carriage. Control of
the movement of this assembly in positioning the heads over the data
area is through a taut band transmission system driven by a DC torque
motor. This servo assembly also contains a photo-optical transducer
which produces track crossing position signals.

Mechanical Assembly
-------------------
The aluminium alloy deck provides a secure stable base to maintain
the relative dimensions between the disc spindle and head positioning
mechanism. External contamination is excluded from the head disc
assembly through the use of a sealed chamber. Within this sealed area
the rotating discs create self-circulating air movements which flow
through the recirculating filter, ensuring an ultra clean environ-
ment. A second filter located in the top cover allows air pressure
equalisation between the chamber and ambient.

Mounting of the deck unit to its mounting frame is realised via anti-
vibration mounts (A/V mounts). The front facia panel of this frame
features two LED status lights - a green light indicating drive ready
and a red light indicating drive selected. In addition this Red LED
is used to flash fault codes from the drives automatic self
diagnostic facility.

Printed Circuit Board
---------------------
The majority of the associated electronic circuitry is contained on a
single printed circuit board (PCB). This has been achieved through
extensive use of state of the art technology including an advanced
microprocessor, a custom gate array I.C., a multilayer PCB and sur-
face mounted components, assembled on both sides of the board. The
complete PCB assembly is fitted to the mounting frame on the under-
side of the drive deck.

Drive Operation
---------------
When the drive is installed in the user's system and all connections
and link positions confirmed, switch power on and allow the drive to
run up. When the discs have reached the operating speed the heads
automatically recalibrate to Track Zero.

Self Diagnostics
----------------
During operation, the drive continuously performs a series of self
checking routines. Any out of range conditions are reported by
flashed codes via the Red LED on the front panel. The codes appear a
group of flashes at a rate of two per seconds with a one second
interval between the groups of flashes.

In the event of such a condition repeatedly arising, i.e. it does not
clear itself after switching of power to the drive and then reappling
power to the drive and then reapplying power, firstly check that the
installation of the unit is correct. If the installation is not
correct, then make a note of the number of flashes in a group and
contact your nearest Newbury Data dealer.

 Note: In particular, please note that 4 flashes signifies a D.C.
 power fault - check the +5V and +12V power lines to the drive.

Line Drivers and Receivers
--------------------------
Two transmission systems are used for ST506 interfacing, one for the
read and write data lines and the other for control and status lines.

   * The MFM Data signals are 5MHz pulse trains which are transmitted
     over differential pair line using the RS422 system. The signal
     lines are straddled by ground lines in the interface cables.

   * The 100 Ohm terminating resistor is in the drive on the write
     lines and in the controller on the read lines.

The Control and Status signals use LS TTl drivers and receivers.

The 180/470 Ohm terminator netwotks are required only at the receiv-
ing end of the line. That is in the controller for status lines and
in the drive (or last drive in a daisy chained system) for control
lines.

EMI
---
The drive is not a stand alone device and therefore is not governed
by international standards for electromagnetic interference. An OEM
user of disc drives should ensure that an overall system installation
(including the NDR drive) complies with appropriate EMI standards.
