Drive Option Selection
----------------------
While jumpers may be located in different locations on the differ-
ential board, the nomenclature is consistent with the standard SCSI
board. Board markings will identify each option. For example, when a
jumper is installed at W2, terminator power is provided by the host
system via interface cable J1, pin 26.

If more than one drive is to be installed in a system, remove the
interface terminator at RN9 from each drive except the last one; and
configure each drive to a differnet SCSI ID.

Up to eight devices (A host and seven targets) can be attached to
the SCSI bus. The 1580 Series has three ID jumpers which are used
to assign one of the eight SCSI ID bits (0 - 7) to the drive.

In multiple-device systems, each drive must have its own unique ID
bit.

Dimensions and Mounting
-----------------------
The 1580 series uses industry-standard mounting techniques for
5 -inch Winchester disk drives.

Recommended orientation is vertical on either side, or horizontal
with the Device Electronics board down.

Mounting Screws
---------------
2 per side 6-32 UNC-2B x 0.156 max deep.
4 on bottom 6-32 UNC-2B x 0.20 max deep.

Caution: The mounting screws must be selected so that they do not
penetrate the bottom mounting holes more than 0.20 inches and the
side mounting holes more than 0.156 inches. Screws that are too long
will short to PCBA components and/or prevent proper operation of the
shock mount system.

Power Connector J3
------------------
DC power is supplied to the drive at 4-pin, keyed, AMP MATE-N-LOK
Connector J3.

Suggested wire size is 18 AWG (minimum) for all pins.

Recommended mating connector is AMP 1-480424-0

Recommended pins are AMP P/N 60619-4 (loose), 61117-4 (strip)

Interface Electrical Characteristics (Single-ended)
---------------------------------------------------
Interface control and status signals are digital (open collector TTL)
utilizing industry-standard transmitters and receivers which provide
a terminated, single-ended system.

 The assigned signals are terminated with 220 ohms to +5V (nominal)
 and 330 ohms to ground at each end of the cable. All signals use
 open-collector or three-state drivers.

Single-ended drivers and receivers allow a maximum cable length of
six meters (primarily for connection within a cabinet).

Signal transmission requires a single 50-conductor cable. A
characteristic impedance of 100 ( 10%) ohms is recommended for un-
shielded flat or twisted pair ribbon cable.

   a. Input Characteristics
      Each received signal has the following characteristics when
      measured at the interface connector.

      1)  Signal true = 0.0 VDC to 0.8 VDC
      2)  Maximum total input load = -0.4 milliamps at 0.4 VDC
      3)  Signal false = 2.0 VDC to 5.25 VDC
      4)  Minimum input hysteresis = 0.2 VDC

   b. Output Characteristics
      Each signal driven by an SCSI device has the following
      characteristics when measured at the interface connector.

      1)  Signal assertion = 0.0 VDC to 0.4 VDC
      2)  Minimum driver output capability = 48 milliamps (sinking) at
          0.5 VDC.
      3)  Signal negation = 2.5 VDC to 5.25 VDC

   c. Terminator Power (TERMPWR at Pin 26)
      Terminator Power has the following requirements:

      V(TERM) = 4.25 VDC to 5.25 VDC

      800 milliamps minimum source drive capability with 1.0 amp
      recommended current limiting (e.g., a fuse).

      1.0-milliamp maximum bus loading (except for the purposes of
      providing power to an internal terminator).

The 1580 Series provides keyed connectors to prevent accidental
grounding or misconnection of terminator power.

 Interface Electrical Characteristics (Differential)
 ---------------------------------------------------
 Differential drivers and receivers allow a maximum cable length of
 25 meters. Differential interface signals consist of two signal lines
 denoted +SIGNAL and -SIGNAL.

 A signal is true when +SIGNAL is more positive than -SIGNAL, and a
 signal is false when -SIGNAL is more positive than +SIGNAL.

 - Signal transmission requires a single 50-conductor cable.
 - A characteristic impedance of 100 ( 10%) ohms is recommended for
   unshielded twisted-pair ribbon cable.
 - A minimum conductor size of 28 AWG should be employed to minimize
   noise effects and ensure proper distribution of optional
   terminator power.

A stub length of no more than 0.2 meters is allowed off the mainline
interconnection within any connected equipment.

   a. Input Characteristics
      Each of the drives signal receivers has the following
      characteristics when measured at the interface connector.

      I(I) (input current on either input) =  2.0 milliamps, max

      Note: These characteristics include both receivers and passive
            drivers.

 This requirement is met with the input voltage varying between -7V
 and +12V, with power either on or off, and with hysteresis equaling
 35 millivolts, minimum.

   b. Output Characteristics
      Each driven signal has the following characteristics when
      measured at the interface connector.

      V(OL)  (low-level output voltage) = 1.7 V max at I(OL)
             where I(OL) = 55 milliamps

      V(OH)  (high-level output voltage) = 2.7 V max at I(OH)
             where I(OH) = -55 milliamps

      V(OD)  (differential voltage) = 1.0 V minimum, with commonmode
             voltages ranges from -7 to +12

      V(OL) and VOH are measured between the output terminal and the
      SCSI device's logic ground reference.

   c. Terminator Power (TERMPWR at Pin 25 and 26)
      Terminator Power has the following requirements:

      V(TERM) = 4.0 VDC to 5.25 VDC

      600 milliamps minimum source drive capability with 1.0 amp
      recommended current limiting (e.g., a fuse).

      1.0 milliamp maximum busloading (except for the purposes of
      providing power to an internal terminator).

The 1580 Series provides keyed connectors to prevent accidental
grounding or misconnection of terminator power.

Signal Connector J1
-------------------
Signal Connector J1 has 50 pins and is compatible (i.e., pin and
function) with the Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) proposed
by the American National Standards Committee. A differential inter-
face is also available on special request.

Multi-Function Connector J2
---------------------------
Multi-Function Connector J2 has 24 pins and provides an interface
connection for a user-supplied Operator Panel.

Ground Connectors J4 and J5
---------------------------
3/16-inch spade lugs J4 and J5 are provided for grounding. Systems
characteristics determine proper ground connection.

Mating connector: AMP 60972-2 or equivalent.

Interface Terminator
--------------------
Interface Terminator pack RN9 provides proper termination for the
interface lines. In multiple-device systems, the terminators are
installed in the LAST device on the cable.

Shock Protection
----------------
To protect the heads and media against damage caused by shock and
vibration, 1580-series drives incorporate a Head/Disk Assembly (HDA)
which is shock isolated from the outer Frame.

For additional protection, an area of the disk not used for data
storage is reserved for "landing" the heads. Whenever power is
removed from the drive, the positioner automatically moves the heads
to the landing zone where an automatic latching mechanism locks the
positioner in place.

Cooling
-------
The enclosure and mounting structure must be designed to allow for
the natural convection of heat by permitting air to flow freely
around the PCBA.

A typical 1588-15 dissipates 28 watts (95.5 Btu/hr) in the standby
mode and 33 watts (112.6 Btu/hr) while positioning. This is
sufficient to maintain the ambient air temperature around the drive
at or below 50*C (122*F).

If the enclosure is small and/or natural air flow is restricted, a
fan may be required.

Spindle Motor and Control
-------------------------
The disks are rotated at 3600 RPM by a direct drive, brushless, DC
motor and its associated electronics.

1588-15S/1585-8S Specifications
-------------------------------
The 1588-15S is a short stroke version of the 1580 Series drive
specifically engineered for applications requiring very fast access.
This is achieved by reducing the total number of accessible
cylinders.

The 1585-8S is a depopulated version of the 1580 Series drive
specifically engineered for applications which require 389 Mbytes and
15 MHz transfer rate at the lowest possible cost. This is achieved
by removing three disks and seven data heads. The total cylinders are
then adjusted to obtain a capacity of approximately 389 Mbytes.

Formatted Capacity Calculation
------------------------------
The formatted capacity of the 1580 Series depends upon a number of
user-selectable variables. One critical variable is sparing, either
track-oriented or cylinder-oriented. The following formula is used to
calculate the formatted capacity (C) of the 1580 Series using
cylinder-oriented sparing:

C = [(SPT x HDS) - (SPARE_SPC)] x (1632 - 3 - SPARE_CYL) x (BYTES)

SPARE SPC is the number of spare sectors per cylinder. This variable
is user programmable. The recommended value varies with each drive
model as follows:

1588-15 = 4 1587-12 = 6 1585-09 = 5
1588-14 = 7 1586-11 = 6 1585-08 = 4
1587-13 = 7 1586-10 = 5 1584-07 = 4

1632 is the number of physical cylinders.

3 cylinders are used by the drive and are not useraccessible.

SPARE CYL is the number of spare cylinders. This variable is user
programmable; a typical value for sparing is 3.

BYTES is the bytes per sector (e.g., 1024, 512, etc.)

Media Defects
-------------
Media defects are physical characteristics of the media which result
in repetitive read errors when a functional drive is operated within
specified operating conditions.

At the time of manufacture, a media test system evaluates every drive
and identifies each media defect location. The defects are listed on
a label affixed to the drive.

The defective areas are located by:

      a. Head address (HD)
      b. Cylinder address (CYL)
      c. Number of Bytes from Index (BFI).

A printed list of the defects is also shipped with each drive.

In addition to listing the defects on the label and the printout, the
defects are also mapped on the drive.

Introduction
------------
The 1580 Series is designed for trouble-free operation. Since most
maintenance procedures require a high degree of technical
sophistication, proper training, and the right equipment, only pro-
perly trained personnel should perform corrective maintenance.

Preventive Maintenance
----------------------
Preventive maintenance is not required during normal use.

Corrective Maintenance
----------------------
There are no field-replaceable components within the sealed area;
therefore, cleanarea integrity MUST NOT be violated. The Micropolis
warranty will be invalidated if any of the screws in the Head/Disk
Assembly are removed.
