LK1 Write Protect Options
---------------------------
The drive is supplied write enabled (i.e. LK1 is not installed).
Three possible write protect/enable options are provided on drive.

When shipped from Newbury Data all drives are assigned unit number 1.
However, any unit number in the range 1 to 4 can be set by jumper
link on the PCB. Please install this link as required by your
application. Note that all drives sharing a daisy-chain must have
unique unit numbers.

LK4 Remote Motor Start Option
-------------------------------
When shipped by Newbury Data, the drive has link 4 (LK4) omitted. In
this configuration, irrespective of the state of the interface line
MOTOR OFF P2/J2 pin 5, the drive spins up as soon as DC power is
applied and spins down only when DC power is removed. With LK4
installed spin up is delayed until the controller makes MOTOR OFF
false (high), and soin down occurs only when the controller makes
MOTOR OFF true (low).

A drive may be mounted in any orientation except front panel
downwards.

Mounting
--------
Eight mounting holes, four on the bottom and two on each side are
provided for mounting the drive into an enclosure. The sizes and
locations of these holes are identical to those used on industry
standard 5 " Winchester and minifloppy drives. If any difficulty is
encountered when installing a drive, please contact the Marketing
Department of Newbury Data Recording.

 Notes: Protrusion of screws through side holes is limited to 0.12in
        Mounting screws shall not be torqued to greater than 9 ib-in

Operating Environment
---------------------
The drive is designed to operate in a standard office environment.
High relative humidity condition should be avoided to prevent the
possibility of condensation. Also avoid low relative humidity
conditions to prevent particle accumulation by static attraction. The
drive is not intended for use in a harsh environment with high dust
and dirt concentrations.

To ensure reliable operation, it is recommended that an airflow of at
least 3 CFM (85 litres pro minute) is provided across the disc drive
and PCB assembly in the final installation configuration.

Drive Connections
-----------------
A typical system consisting of a controller and 4 drives. The
controller communicates with each drive requires a power supply
connection. All drives share the common daisy-chain, although only
one drive is selected at any given time. Note that a termination
resistor pack must be installed only in the last drive on the daisy-
chain.

The daisy-chain and radial cables should be connected to the drive
in similar manner. Note that the radial cable must not be daisy-
chained; it must be a direct connection from the drive to the
controller.

Termination
-----------
Termination of the daisy-chain signal lines is required only in the
drive at the end of the daisy-chain. All drives shipped from Newbury
Data have a 220/330 ohm resistor pack installed for this purpose.
Therefore on a multi-drive installation you must remove the
terminator packs from all but the last drive. When fitting a
terminator pack ensure packs from all but the last drive. When
fitting a terminator pack ensure that it is plugged in the correct
way.

DC Power Connector
------------------
The DC power connector is a 4 pin AMP Mate-N-Lock connector P/N
350543-1 mounted on the PCB. The recommended mating connector is AMP
P/N 1-480424-0 utilising AMP sockets P/N 350078-4 (strip) or P/N
61173 (loose piece).

DC Power cables
---------------
If one common power supply unit (PSU) is used to supply power to two
or more drives, the DC cables from each drive should be taken all the
way back to the PSU in order to avoid common impedance problems.

Zero Volts Connector
--------------------
A lug connector is provided at the rear of the HDA (Head Disk
Assembly) and is connected to the drive's 0V plane on the drive's
PCB, therefore, the user need not connect another separate 0V to this
lug. Users should also note that the black mounting frame surrround-
ing the drive is electrically isolated from the HDA by the rubber
anti-vibration mounts.

J1/P1 34 Way Daisy-Chain Connector
-----------------------------------
A 34 way, 0.1" pitch, PCB edge connector and a standard 34 way flat-
strip cable form the daisy-chain cable which connects to the drive.
The other end of this cable can be directly connected to the
controller or linked in a daisy-chain configuration with other
drives. The recommended mating connector is a Scotchflex 3463-0001,
Key Part NO. 3439-2, or AMP 88373-3, Key Part No. 88113-1.

J2/P2 20 Way Radial Cable Connector
------------------------------------
A 20 way, 0.1" pitch, PCB edge connector and a standard 20 way flat-
strip cable form the radial cable which connects to the drive. This
radial cable must not be daisy-chained; it must be a direct
connection from the drive to the controller.
The recommended mating connector is a Scotchflex 3461-0001, Key Part
No. 3439-2, or AMP 88373-6, Key Part No. 88113-1.

The connectors J1 and J2 are insulation-displacement types so for the
daisy-chain cable the connectors can be fitted at an appropriate
position to suit the user's system layout.

Introduction to the 1000/2000 Range
-----------------------------------
The Newbury Data NDR 1000/2000 range of disc drives are high
performance Winchester drives with 5.25 inch discs.

They are design for use with computer based systems where high capa-
city, fast access times and small sizes are required. All drives in
the 1000/2000 range embody the ST506 interface with read and write
data beeing transmitted in MFM code at 5 Mbits per second. Any
customer who selects a controller using a high density coding scheme
(such as RLL) must accept the responsibility for ensuring the
suitability of such a controller and the selection of NDR 1000/2000
drives to meet this more demanding application and the chosen error
rate performance level.

Drive Operation
---------------
When the drive is installed in the user's system and all connections
and link positions confirmed, switch the poer on and allow the drive
to run up. The audible sound as the drive achieves full speed normal.
When the discs have reached their operating speed the actuator lock
disengages and the heads are automatically positioned on track zero.
The red Activity light on the fron panel comes on whenever the drive
is Ready and Selected.

 Removal of either of the DC voltages (+12V or +5V) will cause an
 emergency retract i.e. withdrawal of the heads to the landing zone,
 where they will be held in place by the actuator arm solenoid lock
 until such time as the power is restored.

Media Quality
-------------
All disc media exhibits microscopic flaws known as media defects.
This is an unavoidable feature of the manufacturing process. Newbury
Data uses sophistical test methods with stringent thresholds to
identify these defects and a Defect Map listing their locations is
shipped with every drive. The defect map identifies each defect by
cylinder number, head number and the byte count from Index.

It is essential that the user should flag out all sectors which
contain media defects so that they will not be used to record inform-
ation.

In the unlikely event that the users system should detect any media
defects not listed on the Newbury Data Defect Map, then these sectors
should also be flagged out. It is only when these precautions are
taken that the specified read error rate of better than 1 error in
10 high 10 vits read will be met.

Note: The drive is guaranteed to be defect free on cylinder zero.

The number of defects per track will not exceed 5 and the number of
defects on any one surface will not exceed 20. The average number of
defects per surface will not exceed 10.

Note: These maximum specified access times will only be met at normal
temperatures and voltages. Extremes of temperature and voltage can
add a maximum of 3 ms to these parameters.

Maintenance and Fault Finding
-----------------------------
The drive requires no maintenance and fiel repair is restricted to
PCB replacement as repairs within the sealed module require special
tools and Class 100 cleanroom conditions.

Spares
------
The customer has the option of purchasing spare PCBs which can be
held in case of drive failure. The recommended quantity of spares,
assuming normal day operation, is as follows:

Customers can by spares direct from Newbury Data Recording (NDR) or
the supplier from whom the drive was purchased.

DC Power Requirements
---------------------
As with most disc drives the NDR 1000/2000 range draws substantially
more current when starting than when running normally. Some power
supplies are designed specifically to cope with these conditions, but
others which trip (i.e. cut out rather then current limit) must be
careful chosen. Note that the NDR 1000/2000 range embodies a remote
motor start option which allows for power supply sequencing in
multiple drive installations.

Line Drivers and Receivers
--------------------------
Two transmission systems are used on the industry standard ST506
interface, one for the read and write data lines and the other for
the control and status lines.

Control and Statur Signals
--------------------------
The St506 interface uses the negative logic convention for all
control and status signals. This ensures that signals go false in the
event of an open circuit on the interface cable. The negative logic
convention is as follows:

    - When a signal is true or asserted or logic 1 the interface line
      is at a low voltage.

    - When a signal is false or negated or logic 0 the interface line
      is at a high voltage.

The Control and Status signals use LS TTL drivers and receivers.
The characteristic impedance of a parallel pair of wires in the
interface cable is approximately 100 ohms. To avoid any unwanted re-
flections, a 220/330 ohm resistor terminating network should be in-
serted at the receiving end of the line i.e. in the last drive
connected to the daisy-chain cable.

MFM Data Transmission System
----------------------------
The MFM Data signals are 5MHz pulse trains which are transmitted as
differential signals over pairs of lines using the RS422 system. The
signal lines are straddled by 0V lines in the interface cables.

The transmission line is terminated at the receiving end with a 100
ohm resistor. These terminating resistors are installed permanently
in the drive and in the controller.

Introduction
------------
The interface supports the following controller commands:

   Step (buffered Seeks)

   Remote Write Protect
   Motor Off

The drive transmits the following status signals:

The NDR 1000/2000 range of drives have up to fifteen read/write heads
and therefore require four HEAD SELECT lines. This is achieved, in
accordance with industry standard, by using the P1/J1 pin 2 line of
the daisy-chain cable for HEAD SELECT. Some controllers use this line
for a command called "Reduce Write Current" which is not needed on
Newbury Data drives. It is important to ensure that the controller
does not assert this signal on drives which have less than 9 heads
i.e. the NDR 1065 and NDR 1085. However, if the controller insists on
asserting this signal and gives the user the option of specifying the
start cylinder, then the user must ensure that this signal can only
be asserted at a cylinder address greater than the maximum number of
cylinders implemented on the drive.

On drives which have more then 8 heads this signal must be used for
Head Select.

The above standards for safety generally apply to data processing
equipment intended to be connected to maximum nominal supply voltages
of 600v operating in normal continuous use in non-hazardous
conditions. Protection from electric shock due to failure of
insulation is provided for by grounding.
