HEWLETT HP C3007/09/10 TECHNICAL REFERENCE MANUAL 5960-8345

Notes On Installation
=====================

Screws
------
Use 6/32 screws and torque them to 10 inch-pounds.
When mounted, the hardware must not protrude more than 1 mm (0.04in.)
beyond the inside of the disk drive frame.

Operating Temperature Guidelines
--------------------------------
Ambient air temperature and airflow must be properly balanced to
maintain drive performance and reliability.

 Operating Temperature Considerations
 ------------------------------------
The operating ambient air temperature specification is 0*C to 55*C
   (32*F to 131*F).

Adjust the ambient air temperature to prevent the temperature at
each location from exceeding the stated limit.

 Airflow Considerations
 ----------------------
The recommended air flow to maintain the component temperatures is
8 to 10 CFM (cubic feet per minute) with most of the air flowing
   across the printed circuit board.

Airflow Considerations Wide and Dual Port drives
 -------------------------------------------------
The recommended air flow to maintain the component temperatures is
9 to 11 CFM (cubic feet per minute) with most of the air flowing
   across the printed circuit board.

Synchronized Spindle
--------------------
The C3007/09/10 disk drives supports all four synchronized spindle
modes: Stand Alone, Slave, Master, and Master Control. The power-on
default for all drives is the Stand Alone Mode.

When the drive is in the Stand Alone mode:

It does not transmit a sync signal
It does not receive an externally sourced slave sync input

When the drive is set to the Slave mode:

It does not transmit a sync signal
It receives an externally sourced slave sync on the slave input
line (or from the SCSI connector pin 29)

When the drive is set to the Master mode:

It transmit a sync signal on both the master and slave lines (or
from the SCSI connector pin 29)
It syncs internally to the same signal

When the drive is set to the Master Control mode:

It transmit a sync signal on the master line
It receives an externally sourced sync on the slave line (or from
   the SCSI connector pin 29)

SCSI Connector
--------------
The SCSI device connector is a nonshielded 50-pin connector
consisting of two rows of 25 male pins 2.54 mm (0.1 in.) apart.

The SCSI cable connector should be a nonshielded 50-pin keyed
connector consisting of two rows of 25 female contacts with adjacent
contacts 2.54 mm (0.1 in.) apart. A shroud and header body should be
used.

Cabling Requirements
--------------------
The disk drive adheres to the cabling requirements and limitations
set forth in the ANSI SCSI specifications.

 - Cables with a characteristic impedance of 100 ohms 10% are re-
commended unshielded flat or twisted pair ribbon cable.

 - Cables with a characteristic impedance of 90 ohms 10% are pre-
   ferred for shielded cables.

 - To minimize discontinuities and signal reflections, do not use
cables with different impedances on the same bus.

 - A minimum cable size of 28 AWG should be used to minimize noise
effects and ensure proper distribution of termination power.

- Cables must be properly terminated

Single-Ended Cable
------------------
A 50-conductor flat cable or 25-signal twisted-pair cable should be
used. Cable length should be equal to or less than 6.0 meters. This
refers to internal and external cable length (except stubs).

A stub length of no more than 0.1 meter is allowed off the main line
interconnection within any connected device.

Differential Cable
------------------
A 50-conductor flat cable or 25-signal twisted-pair cable should be
used. Twisted pair cabling is preferred to minimize noise. Cable
length should equal to or less than 25 meters. This refers to
internal and external cable length (except stubs).

A stub length of no more than 0.2 meter is allowed off the main line
interconnection within any connected device.

 Power Distribution
 ------------------
The +5 and +12 voltages provided by an external dc power supply are
distributed to the spindle motor driver, actuator driver, analog
amplifiers, and disgital circuitry. A reset output alerts the other
circuits when power-on occurs and when power is lost. Each circuit
responds in a predefined manner to the reset condition.

Dual Port Operating Specifications
----------------------------------
This section provides information for the mechanical and electrical
installation specific to the Dual Port option. The information that
is common between the standard products and the Dual Port products is
contained before and is not duplicated in this section.

Dual Port SCSI PCA Dimensions
-----------------------------
In order to accommodate the extra logic and extra connector for Dual
Port functionality, the board is extended 0.9 in. (22.85 mm) beyond
the 5.25 in. form factor.

Dual Port SCSI Address Selection
--------------------------------
Each SCSI port has three pin-sets to set the SCSI address
independently from the other port address.

SCSI Terminators
----------------
The Dual Port differential PCA does not provide SCSI bus terminators
or terminator power. The system integrator should provide for proper
bus termination and termination power external to the Dual Port
drive.

Dual Port SCSI Differential Connectors
---------------------------------------
The Dual Port SCSI connector consists of two stacked nonshielded 50-
pin connectors, each having two rows of 25 male pins with adjacent
pins 2.54 mm (0.1 in.) apart. The connector pin assignments are
identical for both Ports A and B.

Mating Connector Requirements
-----------------------------
Each port of the stacked Dual Port connector requires one mating SCSI
cable connector. The connector should be a nonshielded 50-pin keyed
connector consisting of two rows of 25 female contacts 2.54 mm (0.1
in.) apart.

Front Panel LED Indicators
--------------------------
There are two green LED indicators, one per SCSI port. One LED shows
activity on port A and the second LED shows activity on port B.

Detailed Description
--------------------
The Disk Drive is able to service up to 14 initiators (7 per port)
by maintaining both an initiator SCSI ID and port designator
separately for each initiator.

HEWLETT HP C3007/09/10 TECHNICAL REFERENCE MANUAL 5960-8345

Product Description
-------------------
The HP C3007/09/10 SCSI single-ended and differential disk drives are
reliable, low cost, high capacity, high performance, random access
mass storage devices. Each product utilizes sputtered thin-film 5.25-
inch disks as storage media.

Specials
--------
For customer needs that differ from the products described in this
manual, Hewlett-Packard can provide specially modified products.
These modifications are ordered, defines, engineered, and
manufactured under "special" contract negotiations.

 Seek Times (including settling)

       +-----------------------------+--------+

Front Panel LED Indicator
-------------------------
The light emitting diode (LED) on the front of the disk drive is an
activity light that indicates the operational status of the drive
from power-on, through the self-test diagnostics, and into normal
operation.

1. On
At Power-On, the LED turns on until the Power-On sequence is complete
and then turns off.

If the Auto-SpinUp option jumper is installed, the Power-On sequence
includes execution of the SpinUp sequence, calibrating the head
positioning electronics, and testing the read/write system.

If the Auto-SpinUp option is not installed, the Power-On sequence
includes execution of the SpinUp sequence only.

2. Flashing
A flashing LED (approximately 1 Hz) indicates that the controller has
failed all or a portion of the internal diagnostic tests.

3. Intermittent
After the power-on diagnostic have completed, the LED functions as an
activity light and will go any time the disk drive is executing a
command, reading, or writing. If the LED is off, the drive is idle.

Sector Format
-------------
The smallest directly addressable storage area on a data surface is a
sector. Accessing a sector is accomplished when the controller
specifies the address of the cylinder, head, and sector. The C3007/
09/10 product support variable length sectors. Sector size is set
with Parameter Page 03H of the Mode Select Command.

Error Correction Code
---------------------
The HP C3007/09/10 Series of disk drives use a Reed-Solomon error
correction code (ECC) for detection and correction of data errors.
During a write operation, the ECC function generates 18 bytes of ECC
information into the ECC field as the sector is written. During a
read operation, the controller generates an 18-byte code from the
data field being read, and compares it to the ECC field created
during the write operation. If the 18-byte code differs from the ECC
field, a data error is detected and the ECC field is used to correct
the data.

RAM Buffer
----------
The RAM Buffer contains 128-kilowords of static RAM. All data trans-
ferred between the host and the disk must pass through the RAM
buffer. It is protected by an additional 2 bits of parity for each
16-bit word transferred by the DMA.

Disk Controller
---------------
The disk controller coordinates the flow of data between the SCSI
interface and the disk controller. It contains a DMA section which
controls the transfer of data between the SCSI interface, the buffer
RAM, and the disk controller. The DMA accesses the 128-kiloword
static RAM buffer to match the transfer speeds of the SCSI interface
and the disk controller.

The disk controller also performs error checking on data being
transferred form the disk to the RAM buffer and generates ECC on data
transferred from the RAM buffer to the disk. The data controller also
does header verification during read/write operations.

Spindle Motor Driver
--------------------
The spindle motor driver provides 3-phase current to start, drive,
and control the speed of the in-hub spindle motor. Hall-effect
sensors mounted on the spindle assembly provide feedback for phase
switching control.

Fast Seek Operation
-------------------
Fast Seek operation (option pin-set 2 shorted) consists of the
following:

 - The Fast Seek data storage area is based on the outermost data
cylinders in Zone 0 (physical cylinders 1 through 1100). This
provides random average seeks of 0.9 milliseconds.

 - A Read Capacity command will cause the drive to return capacities
relative to the outermost data cylinders in Zone 0 (physical
   cylinders 1 through 1100).

- All other drive operations are not affected.

 - The drive will still seek, read, and write outside of the Fast Seek
zone if instructed ti do so by the initiator.

- Sparing operations are not affected by Fast Seek operation.
