Jumper Setting
==============

TERMPWR (Terminator Power)
--------------------------
Generally, the host is the only device on the SCSI bus required to
provide TERMPWR for the bus. To ensure that there is a sufficient
level of power along the entire SCSI bus, Digital Equipment
Corporation recommends that all devices on the SCSI bus supply
TERMPWR (if they are capable). SCSI devices are protected by a diode
or similar semiconductor to prevent back flow of the terminator
power when more than one device supplies this power.

NOTE
LR Models do not provide TERMPWR to the SCSI bus. The RAID connector
does not accommodate this feature.

 TERMPWR L/LD Models

++ | To provide TERMPWR, install the

SCSI Bus Termination
--------------------
Both ends of the SCSI bus cable must be terminated. One end is
terminated at the host. The other end must be terminated by the last
SCSI device on the SCSI bus.

Drive Termination
-----------------
DSP3000L Series drives contain internal components to provide active
termination of the SCSI bus.

When this drive is the last device on the SCSI bus, configure the
drive to enable active termination. Do so by installing a shunt
jumper at the drive's active termination header. If active
termination is not required for this drive, make sure that the
jumper is not installed.

SCSI ID (Address) Selection
---------------------------
Each device on the SCSI bus must have a unique SCSI ID number
assigned to it.

ID number for L/LD models (8-bit SCSI) range from 0 through 7. For
LW/LWD models (16-bit SCSI), the numbers range from 0 through 15.

SCSI ID numbers for LR models range from 0 through 7 for 8-bit
configurations and from 0 through 15 for 16-bit configurations.

Configure the SCSI ID of L/LD/LW/LWD models by installing jumper
across the indicated Option connector pins. For LR versions, provide
the proper open or ground signal input to the referenced pins of the
drive's 80-pin RAID connector.

Configure Optional Features
---------------------------
CAUTION
The 5-volt signals of two or more drives should not be connected
together or to any other current source by using the Option
connector. Doing so may cause drive malfunction or component damage.

Except when connecting several drives together for a spindle
synchronization application, do not connect the ground signals of two
or more drives together or to any other current source using the
Option connector. Doing so may introduce ground loop problems.

The following optional features can be configured according to your
system requirements. These features (model-dependent) include:

 - Notification of AC power failure (not currently supported by LR
models. SCSI RST may be used instead.)

- Spindle synchronization

- Write protection (not currently supported by LR models)

- Spin delay

AC Failure Notification
-----------------------
The AC Low connection (AC_LOW L) is not currently supported on LR
models, SCSI Bus Reset provides the alternative to the AC Low
warning.

The host system or power supply can warn the drive of an impending
AC failure by asserting the signal AC_LOW L. This is an active low
signal (low means power failure).

NOTE
The system should provide this warning at least 10 milliseconds prior
to failure for this feature to be operational.

To utilize the AC-LOW L warning feature, connect the system's AC
power warning signal and associated ground to the referenced AC_LOW L
and ground pins on the Option connector. When the host system assert
the AC_LOW L warning to the drive, the drive prevents write-spliced
for outstanding writes.

    DSP3133LD +---- AC_LOW L

Spindle Synchronization
-----------------------
DSP3000L Series drives support synchronized spindle operation. Master
or slave synchronized operation is set through a SCSI Mode Select
Page.

When the drive operates as a Master, it generates a spindle
synchronization reference signal (SPINDLE_SYNC_REF L). When operating
as a slave, the drive synchronizes its spindle according to the
SPINDLE_SYNC_REF L input reference. The drive always maintains local
speed regulation when no reference signal is applied.

NOTE
The reference signal must originate from drives with the same
electronics modules. Fo example, connect Model DSP3107L only with
another DSP3107L drive. Do not connect the SPINDLE_SYNC_REF L signal
so that of any other model disk drive. Otherwise, the drive may mal-
function.

When connecting multiple drives together for spindle synchronization,
be sure to use proper cabling techniques to avoid ground loop
problems.

Spindle Sync Connection
-----------------------
The following figure shows the SPINDLE_SYNC_REF L connection pin
(and associated ground) for DSP3000L Series drives.

    DSP3053L Option Connector

    DSP3133L +1---------+
    DSP3133LD

For L/LD models, pin 10 is provided as an alternate SPINDLE_SYNC_REF
L connection to facilitate installations where a 10-pin header is
used to connect several remote features. Pin 19 is provided to
facilitate the use of a 2-pin connector for SPINDLE_SYNC_REF L
connections. The ground return is pin 20, although pins 2, 4, or 6
can be used for the ground return.

Write Protection
----------------
L/LD/LW/LWD models support either the Write Protect or Spin Delay
mode. If your drive supports the Write Protect mode, provide write
protection by installing the jumper across the referenced pins of the
Option connector.

To disable Write Protection from L/LD model drives, remove the jumper
from across 13 and 14 of the Option connector.

Note that when the Write Protect Mode bit is set to a 1, automatic
spin up occurs at power on.

Spin Delay
----------
The method for establishing spin-up characteristics is dependent upon
the drive model.

Spin Delay - L/LD/LW/LWD Models
-------------------------------
These drives support either the Write Protect or Spin Delay mode. If
your drive supports the Spin Delay mode, you can program the drive
automatically spin-up at powere on by installing the jumper across
the referenced Option connector pins.

To have spin-up controlled by a Start/Stop Unit command, remove the
jumper.

Remote Features
---------------
DSP3000L Series drives support the following remote features, which
can be configured at the drive's Option connector or RAID backplane:

- Remote SCSI ID selection
- Remote LED status display

Remote SCSI ID Selection
------------------------
SCSI ID can be set remotely from an external (remote) switch or
control panel. For L/LD/LW/LWD models, this is accomplished using the
Option connector. For LR models, the output of the remote or external
ID switches takes the place of jumpers or circuits at the RAID system
backplane.

Configure L/LD/LW/LWD models for remote ID selection by removing the
SCSI ID jumpers (if present) fromn the SCSI ID pins. Then connect the
leads from the external selection switch to the referenced pins.
Observe the following guidelines while doing so.

- ID bit 0, at Pin 1, is the Least Significant Bit.

 - SCSI ID bits 0, 1, 2, and 3 are active LOW signals. That is, the
bit is a 1 if the corresponding remote switch is closed to ground.

 - For L/LD models, use pins 2, 4, and 6 as the associated ground re-
turns for ID bits 0, 1, and 2 respectively. They can be used
individually, or the ground returns of all three ID bits can be
   combined at pin 2, 4, or 6.

Remote LED Status Display
-------------------------
Busy and Fault status for L/LD/LW/LWD models can be monitored by
connecting a remote Busy and a remote Fault display LED to the
drive's Option connector.

 Remote Busy - L/LD/LW/LWD Models
 --------------------------------
The remotely monitor Busy status of the drive, connect the cathode
side of the remote Busy LED to the BSY_OUT L pin. The anode side of
the LED connects to the +5 VDC OUT pin.

 Remote Fault - L/LD/LW/LWD Models
 ---------------------------------
The remotely monitor Fault status of the drive, connect the cathode
side of the remote Fault LED to the FLT_OUT pin. The anode side of
the LED connects to the +5 VDC OUT pin.

Power-On Tests
--------------
After power is applied, and before spin-up is completed, the drive
performs self-test diagnostics prior to making itself visible on the
SCSI bus. These intitial self-test check most of the electronics that
control HDA, but not the SCSI transceiver or SCSI connector.

After spin-up, additional tests complete self-test coverage of the
electronics module and the HDA. The unit appears not ready to the
host between completion of the initial self-tests and completion of
the drive's post spin-up tests.

LED Indicators
--------------
The green Busy LED illuminates to signify the drive is working on a
SCSI command. The amber Fault LED indicates a fault status.

Both the Busy and Fault indicators light briefly during power up.
This serves as a hardware and lamp test.

During a calibration operation, the Busy LED is illuminated and the
Fault LED flashes. Calibrations occur following some firmware up-
grades. Generally, calibration periods last only about five minutes,
after which the drive comes on-line and both indicators go out.

If the Fault indicator lights at any other time, the drive has failed
and likely requires service (unless the Fault LED was turned on by
means of a MODE SELECT command).

Remote Busy and Fault indicators can be connected to the Option
connector to provide status display at a remote location or panel.
